Box Score 2 SCHENECTADY, NY - The RIT baseball team (17-15, 12-10 Liberty League) concluded Liberty League conference play by splitting a doubleheader against Union (22-9-1, 14-6-1 Liberty League) at Central Park C Diamond on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers won game one, 2-1, before falling in game two, 14-3. The Tigers finished sixth in the Liberty League stadings and will not qualify for the league championship which will be held from May 8-10 at Union, who won the regular season title.
In game one, the Tigers got out to the early lead in the bottom of the first when
Skip Flanagan (Framingham, MA/Bishop Feehan) reached on a fielder's choice that scored
Chris Barr (North Wales, PA/North Penn ). The Dutchmen responded right away in the top of the second when Bradlee grounded out to
Zach Zabel (Clarence, NY/Clarence) to allow designated hitter Eric Egan to score. RIT would score the final and winning run of the game in the bottom of the fifth when Barr tripled to left center to allow
CJ Bolorin (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta) to score.
RIT hurler
Ethan Humbert (Rose, NY/North Rose-Wolcott) was dominant, allowing just three hits and an unearned run in the complete-game gem, striking out six batters, while walking two in the 93-pitch outing. Humbert improved to 2-2 on the year, lowering his earned run average to 2.27.
Union pitcher Greg Geisel was impressive in his six innings of work. He allowed only two earned runs while striking out five and walking three but fell to 0-2 on the season.
In game two the Dutchmen started strong in the top of the first inning and never looked back. Freshman outfielder Kent Curran knocked home the first run on a double to left center that allowed Peretti to score. Neither team was able to find a run until the fifth inning when the Dutchmen extended their lead to 5-0 thanks to RBI's by Peretti, Curran and freshman infielder Jake Fishman.
Union would go on to tack on nine runs over the sixth and seventh innings to take a commanding 14-0 lead. RIT was able to scratch across three runs that came in the bottom of the eighth innings thanks to RBIs by
Will Gorman (Nassau, NY/Columbia) and
Taylor Hogan (Rochester, NY/Brighton).
Beaule pitched a gem of a game in his final regular season collegiate start. He pitched seven scoreless innings before allowing three earned runs as he tired in the eighth. He struck out four and only walked one to improve to 4-1 on the season.
Tyler Leichtenberger (Warren, PA/Warren Area) fell to 3-3 on the season after allowing seven runs, three of the earned, and ten hits to the Dutchmen in 5 1/3 innings.
Brian Sheridan (Trumansburg, NY/Trumansburg),
Conor Herlihy (Geneseo, NY/Geneseo),
Tom Dillon (Oswego, NY/Oswego) and
Rich Sammon (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield) also saw relief action.
Curran led the Dutchmen offense by going 4-for-4 with four RBIs in game two. Fishman and Egan also had big days after collecting three RBIs a piece in game number two. Other to collect hits on the day included junior infielder Anders Goetz, Esposito, Caruso, Peretti, Bradlee and junior infielder C.J. Worley.
Ronnie Canestro (East Amherst, NY/Nichols) was 3-for-5 for the Tigers in game two, while Gorman was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI's.
Zach Zabel (Clarence, NY/Clarence) added a pair of hits and scored a run in the loss.
The Tigers needed to win three of four games over the weekend to qualify for the Liberty League Tournament but could only get the win in game one today. Yesterday, Union defeated RIT by scores of 5-2 and 11-3. Union leads the all-time series between the two schools, 15-9.
RIT is right back in action on Monday with a non-conference home contest against St. John Fisher that starts at 1 p.m.
