Women's basketball outscores Rensselaer 43-25 in second half en route to 73-49 victory



TROY, NY -- The RIT (14-10, 10-4 Liberty League) women's basketball team outscored Rensselaer (7-17, 5-10 Liberty League) 43-25 in the second half as the Tigers beat the Engineers 73-49 Friday night from East Campus Arena. Courtney Tennant (Cortland, NY/Cortland) led RIT with 23 points, including 18 in the second half.

RIT opened the second half on a 14-4 run, taking a 44-28 lead on a layup by Mallory Apperson (Bemus Point, NY/Maple Grove) with 15:26 to play. Apperson scored seven points and grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds for RIT who dominated the boards, 65-38.

The Tigers built the lead to 61-30 on a pair of free throws from Kayla Wheeler (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) with 10:54 to play. She finished with 12 points for RIT on 5-of-8 shooting from the floor.

RIT shot 50 percent from the floor in the second on 27-of-62 shooting. The Tigers scored 22 points in the paint and nine second-chance points in the second half.

The Tigers trailed by two early in the first half, but built a 13-point lead on a free throw by Julia Bender (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) giving RIT a 23-10 lead at the 6:35 mark.

Rensselaer cut RIT's lead to three points when Ashley Clough converted the old fashioned three point play with 4:20 to play in the half.

Apperson gave RIT a 27-20 lead on her layup with 3:10 to play in the opening half. Amanda Lynch answered for the Engineers, cutting RIT's lead to 27-24 she made one-of-two free throws with 42 seconds to play.

A bucket by Sarah Wolcott (Cohocton, NY/Wayland-Cohocton) and a free throw by Ashlynn Palmitesso (Fulton, NY/G. Ray Bodley) gave the Tigers the 30-24 halftime lead.

RIT shot 43.5 percent from the floor for the game on 27-of-62 shooting. The Tigers scored 44 points in the paint and had 18 second-chance points.

RIT, who clinched the fourth seed in the upcoming Liberty League Tournament, will face Skidmore College on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. in the regular season finale in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
