Women's basketball drops regular season finale at Skidmore



SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY - The RIT women's basketball team wrapped up the 2013-14 regular season by falling at Liberty League rival Skidmore (11-14, 6-10 Liberty League) by a score of 75-51 from the Williamson Center on Saturday afternoon. RIT finishes the regular season with a 14-11 mark, 10-6 in league play. RIT is the No. 4 seed in the upcoming Liberty League Tournament and will travel to play No. 1 St. Lawrence on Wednesday, Feb. 26 at 7 p.m.

The Tigers never led in the contest, falling behind early and were unable to recover, as Skidmore opened the game on a 19-6 run.  Skidmore would lead by as much as 23 at 37-14 with 4:57 left in the first half, before heading into the locker room with a 41-22 lead. In the second half, RIT would get as close as 13 on a 3-pointer by Mallory Apperson (Bemus Point, NY/Maple Grove) with 18:35 left, but the Thoroughbreds would score the next 14 points, putting the game away.

Jordyn Wartts led Skidmore with 23 points, six assists, and four steals, while Angela Botiba had 16 points, 16 boards, and a pair of blocked shots.

Courtney Tennant (Cortland, NY/Cortland) led the Tigers with 15 points and three blocks, while Ashlynn Palmitesso (Fulton, NY/G. Ray Bodley) added 14 points, draining four 3-pointers. Kayla Wheeler (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) added eight points, as 11 players saw time on the coutrt.

RIT shot just 31.5 percent from the floor, while turning the ball over 16 times. Skidmore shot 44.4 percent from the floor and turned the ball over 12 times. The Thoroughbreds won the battle of the boards, 51-36 and had 20 second chance points.

The winner of Wednesday's semifinal will face the winner of No. 2 Vassar and No. 3 William Smith will meet on Saturday, March 1 at the site of the highest remaining seed.
