SCHENECTADY, NY -- The RIT (11-10, 7-5 Liberty League) women's basketball team outscored Union College (12-7, 4-6 Liberty League) 14-0 over the final 4:09 to beat the Dutchwomen 70-64 in a critical Liberty League game Tuesday evening from Viniar Athletic Center.
Courtney Tennant (Cortland, NY/Cortland) led RIT with 24 points and 12 rebounds.
Jess Kramer (Fayetteville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while
Ashlynn Palmitesso (Fulton, NY/G. Ray Bodley) and
Kayla Wheeler (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) each scored 11 points for the Tigers who remain in fourth place in the Liberty League standings with a 7-5 mark.
Trailing 64-56 late in regulation, Kramer began the run with a layup off an assist from
Sydney Frank (Haverford, PA/Friends' Central) with 3:29 to play, cutting the Dutchwomen's lead to 64-59.
Tennant cut Union's lead to 64-61 with 2:26 to play on a layup off an assist from Kramer.
On RIT's next possession,
Mallory Apperson (Bemus Point, NY/Maple Grove) converted a pair of free throws after being fouled by Brittney Kenney with 1:51 to play, cutting the Dutchwomen lead to one at 64-63.
RIT's defense tightened on Union's next possession when Tennant stole a ball from Amy Loya. Palmitesso was fouled by Kenney with 1:12 to play. She made both free throws giving RIT a 65-64 lead, which was RIT's first since the 12:54 mark of the first half.
After a missed Union layup, Tennant laid the ball in on RIT's next possession extending the Tigers lead to 67-64 with 36 seconds to play in regulation.
Apperson put the game away with a pair of clutch free throws with three seconds to play, giving the TIgers the six-point win. She finished with seven points, five rebounds and an assist. Apperson and Tennant each scored four points in the Tigers late run.
RIT shot 41.1 percent from the floor on 23-of-56 shooting. The Tigers went 10-of-25 from behind the arc, and were 14-of-17 from the foul line. RIT scored 16 points off of 19 Union turnovers.
Loya and Cailin Schmeer led Union with 15 points apiece.
RIT returns to action on Friday, February 14 when the Tigers host St. Lawrence University at 6 p.m. on the floor of Clark Gym.
