Big second half lifts women's basketball to 59-43 win over St. Lawrence



ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT women's basketball team (12-10, 8-5 Liberty League) picked up a key Liberty League win, beating St. Lawrence (14-7, 10-2 Liberty League) 59-43 on the floor of Clark Gym Friday evening. The Saints came into the game atop the conference standings. RIT puts themselves one step closer to potentially clinching a Liberty League postseason berth.

Courtney Tennant (Cortland, NY/Cortland) led RIT with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Ashlynn Palmitesso (Fulton, NY/G. Ray Bodley) added 15 points, while Sarah Wolcott (Cohocton, NY/Wayland-Cohocton) tallied 11 points, grabbed nine rebounds, had two assists, three blocks and two steals for the Tigers who shot 36.2 percent from the floor.

The Tigers trailed by three in the closing moments of the first half, but rallied with a 9-2 run to end the half, taking a 26-20 lead into the break on a three pointer from Julia Bender (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) at the buzzer.

RIT tightened up on the defensive end in the second half, holding St. Lawrence to 9-of-28 shooting. The Tigers outscored the Saints 33-23 in the second, improving to 8-5 in the Liberty League.

Allison Cady led St. Lawrence with 12 points. Caroline Dalton added 10 points and eight rebounds, while Kara McDuffee scored six points and grabbed eight rebounds.

The Tigers improve to 7-20 all-time against the Saints, 2-2 over the last two seasons.

RIT returns to action on Saturday, February 15 when the Tigers host Clarkson University at 2 p.m. on the floor of Clark Gym. Before the game, RIT will honor seniors Mallory Apperson (Bemus Point, NY/Maple Grove), Kayla Wheeler (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa), Jess Kramer (Fayetteville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt), and Tennant.
