Women's basketball has winning streak end in conference loss at St. Lawrence



CANTON, NY -- The RIT (9-8, 5-3 Liberty League) women's basketball team had its three-game winning streak snapped with an 85-59 loss at St. Lawrence University (11-6, 7-1 Liberty League) on Saturday afternoon.

Senior Kayla Wheeler (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) led RIT with 17 points and five rebounds. Courtney Tennant (Cortland, NY/Cortland) scored 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while Ashlynn Palmitesso (Fulton, NY/G. Ray Bodley) tallied nine points, grabbed three rebounds and had four assists. Senior Mallory Apperson (Bemus Point, NY/Maple Grove) scored eight points and had eight rebounds for the Tigers who shot 30.0 percent from the floor on 21-of-70 shooting. The Tigers were 5-of-15 from behind the arc and went 12-of-22 from the foul line.

RIT led early in the first half, taking a 7-2 lead on a three pointer by Tennant with 18:34 to play in the opening half.

St. Lawrence tied the score at 12-12 on a jumer by Allison Cady at the 15:47 mark of the first half. The Saints went on a 14-6 run, taking a 26-18 lead on a three from Kelly Legg. The Saints finished the half strong, leading RIT 42-32 at the break.

The Tigers shot 36.1 percent from the floor in the first half on 13-of-36 shooting. Tennant led RIT with 10 points, while Palmitesso added nine for the Tigers.

St. Lawrence slowly pulled away in the second half, outscoring RIT 39-27. Wheeler scored 12 of her 17 points in the second half to pace the Tigers.

Kara McDuffee led St. Lawrence with a game-high 28 points and 10 rebounds. Kelly Legg scored 14 points, while Caroline Dalton scored 13 points for the Saints who shot 47.5 percent from the floor on 28-of-59 shooting.

RIT returns to action on Tuesday, February 4 when the Tigers host William Smith College at 6 p.m. on the floor of Clark Gym.
