Women's basketball loses overtime heartbreaker to William Smith



ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT (9-9, 5-4 Liberty League) women's basketball team lost 79-74 in a heartbreaker in overtime to William Smith College (15-5, 8-3 Liberty League) in Liberty League action from Clark Gym on Tuesday evening.

The Herons pulled away with an 8-0 run to start the overtime period after senior Jess Kramer (Fayetteville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) nailed both ends of a 1-and-1 with three seconds to play in regulation, tying the game at 66-66. She finished with 26 points to pace the Tigers.

Ashlynn Palmitesso (Fulton, NY/G. Ray Bodley) scored 17 points for the TIgers who shot 43.9 percent from the floor on 29-of-66 shooting. Courtney Tennant (Cortland, NY/Cortland) and Kayla Wheeler (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) each had nine points, while Mallory Apperson (Bemus Point, NY/Maple Grove) scored eight points and grabbed six rebounds.

The Tigers led by as many as 11 with 7:05 to play before the Herons went on a 18-4 run over the next 5:30. RIT trailed 62-59 with 1:35 to play, but tied the score on a 3-pointer from Kramer with 1:16 to play. After a Jaqueline Murphy jumper and Molly Breen free throws gave the Herons a 65-62 lead, Maria Edwards (Forrest Hill, MD/The Carroll School) cut the lead to one on a reverse layup with 10 to play in regulation.

Melanie Patterson answered right back for William Smith with a free throw, giving the Herons a 66-64 lead. Kramer was fouled out front and calmly made both ends of a 1-and-1 to force the game into overtime.

William Smith scored the first eight points of the overtime, taking a 74-66 lead on a 3-pointer by Murphy.

RIT got within three points on a jumper by Palmitesso with 30 seconds to play in the overtime. RIT tried fouling the Herons, but Erin O'brien drained both her free throws to secure the win for William Smith.

Chloe Hayter led William Smith with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Molly Breen scored 13 points and had 10 rebounds, while Erin O'Brien scored 16 points and had five assists.

RIT will host Vassar College in Liberty League action from Clark Gym Friday, February 7 at 6 p.m.
