ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT men's hockey team goes East for the second straight weekend, traveling to face Atlantic Hockey Association rival Bentley University for a pair of games this weekend. Both Friday and Saturday's games from the John A. Ryan Skating Center get underway at 7:05 p.m.
The Tigers (6-9-3, 5-5-1 AHA) are looking to get back into the win column after having their six-game unbeaten streak snapped in a rough way last weekend, getting swept in a two-game series at Connecticut, falling 2-1 on Friday and 6-2 on Saturday. RIT is currently tied for sixth in the league standings with 11 points.
Six players have at least 10 points for the Tigers this season. Senior forward
Mike Colavecchia (Maple, Ontario/Lindsay Muskies) leads the squad with 17 points on seven goals and 10 assists in 18 games this season. He is just two points shy of becoming the sixth player in RIT hockey history to surpass 100 for his career at the Division I level. In net,
Mike Rotolo (Rochester, NY/Cedar Rapids Roughriders) is 5-2-1 with a 2.48 goals against average and .916 save percentage.
After this weekend, RIT will play nine of its next 10 games at Ritter Arena. The lone road game is at Niagara on Jan., 24 and will be nationally-televised by CBS Sports Network.
Bentley (9-8-2, 7-3-2 AHA) enters the weekend looking to get back into the win column after earning one point in a two-game series against Niagara last weekend. On Friday, the two teams skated to a 2-2 draw, and on Saturday, Bentley had its nine-game unbeaten streak snapped, 5-3. The Falcons are currently second in the AHA standings with 16 points and are out-scoring opponents, 61-52 this season.
Steve Weinstein leads the team in scoring with 25 points on a goal and 24 assists, while Alex Grieve is right behind with 24 points on 13 goals and 11 assists. Brett Gensler has 21 points on 10 goals and 11 assists. Weinstein leads the nation in assists and leads all defensemen in points. In net, Branden Komm is 9-7-2 with a 2.51 goals against average and .925 save percentage.
RIT is 16-6-2 all-time against Bentley, 14-5-2 in the Division I era. The two teams met in the 2012 AHA Quarterfinals, with RIT winning a classic, three-game series, rallying after losing the first game to advance. That series featured RIT's longest ever Division I game, as they outlasted Bentley, 5-4 in double overtime on a goal by
Cameron Burt (Detroit, MI/). The next night,
Taylor McReynolds (Sherwood Park, Alberta/) scored twice to lift the Tigers to a 3-0 win. Last season, the two teams split the season series exactly one year ago to the weekend, 1-1 at Ritter Arena, with Bentley winning 3-0 on Jan. 11, 2013 and RIT winning 4-0 the following evening. RIT is 6-1-1 all-time at the John A. Ryan Skating Center.
