ROCHESTER, NY – Senior forward
Mike Colavecchia (Maple, Ontario/Lindsay Muskies) became the sixth player RIT's Division I history to reach 100 career points, as the Tigers (6-10-3, 5-6-1 AHA) dropped their third straight road contest, falling to AHA foe Bentley (10-8-2, 8-3-2 AHA) by a score of 8-2 at the John A. Ryan Skating Center on Friday evening.
Colavecchia assisted on both RIT goals, scored by
Ben Lynch (Blaine, MN/Lincoln Stars) in the second period and
Nolan Descoteaux (Dallas, TX/South Shore Kings) in the third period. Colavecchia now has 100 points on 39 goals and 61 assists. He leads the team in scoring with 19 points in 2013-14.
The Falcons scored the game's first six goals and cruised to victory. Alex Grieve scored the hat-trick and dished out an assist, while Brett Gensler tallied five points on two goals and three assists. Andrew Gladiuk recorded a goal and three assists, while Justin Breton and Max French each had a goal and two assists.
Bentley led 2-0 after one period and held a 6-1 edge after 40 minutes of play. In net, Branden Komm made 26 saves to record the victory for Bentley.
Bentley out-shot RIT, 38-28, and both teams were 1-for-4 with the man-advantage.
Freshman goaltender
Mike Rotolo (Rochester, NY/Cedar Rapids Roughriders) started in net for the Tigers and stopped 15 of 19 shots before being pulled at the 11:49 mark of the second period to take the loss.
Jordan Ruby (Tavistock, Ontario/Wellington Dukes) also stopped 15 of 19 shots while playing the final 28:11.
"Bentley was a step faster than us tonight," said RIT head coach
Wayne Wilson. "They made some really good plays on several of their goals, but we have to better defensively. Tomorrow is a big game for us, we need to come back and get a very important two points."
Bentley led 2-0 early in the second period, when RIT received a power-play. On that power-play,
Greg Noyes (Lucan, Ontario/Salmon Arm Silverbacks) fired a shot that beat Komm cleanly, but rang off the post and out. Moments later, right after the power-play ended, Grieve scored his second of three goals to make it 3-0 Falcons, turning the momentum in their favor.
Lynch got RIT on the board late in the second period, cutting the Bentley lead to 6-1. He took a feed from
Brad McGowan (Langley, British Columbia/Surrey Eagles) and ripped a wrist shot past Komm for his fifth goal of the season and 80th career point. Colavecchia also assisted on the goal.
Down 7-2 midway through the third period, Descoteaux took a feed from Noyes on the power-play and fired a slap shot from the high slot that eluded traffic and got past Komm for his fourth goal of the season. Colavecchia circled and fed a pass to Noyes, who set up Descoteaux for the one-timer.
RIT is 16-7-2 all-time against Bentley, 14-6-2 in the Division I era. Last season, the two teams split the season series exactly one year ago to the weekend, 1-1 at Ritter Arena, with Bentley winning 3-0 on Jan. 11, 2013 and RIT winning 4-0 the following evening. RIT was 6-1-1 all-time at the John A. Ryan Skating Center before tonight's contest.
RIT has lost three straight games in AHA play for only the second time since joining the league in 2006. The eight goals allowed tied the Division I team mark for most allowed in a game and six-goal loss is the worst in eight AHA seasons.
The Tigers and Falcons complete their weekend series on Saturday from the John A. Ryan Skating Center, starting at 7:05 p.m. RIT is back home for nine of its next 10 games following tomorrow's contest.
