Volleyball loses pair of matches on Friday at Golden Flyer Invitational to Nazareth and Hilbert

The RIT volleyball team (3-3) dropped both of its matches on Friday at the 2013 Nazareth Golden Flyer Invitational. RIT opened by falling to the hosts in four sets, then squandered a two sets to zero lead on Hilbert before falling in five sets.

RIT let a 21-15 lead slip away in the first set, before falling 28-26. In the second set, RIT led 10-6 before Nazareth rattled off a 15-1 run to take control, 25-17. RIT controlled the third set, winning 25-20, before Nazareth won a hotly contested fourth set, 25-22.

Sarah Szybist (Chicago, IL/Ramstein) led the way offensively for the Tigers, slamming 20 kills to go along with eight digs and three blocks. Bethany Davis (Blasdell, NY/Frontier) recorded a double-double with 24 digs and 10 assists. Emma Dowdy (Cocoa, FL/Edgewood) was strong for the Tigers, dishing out a season-best 32 assists to go along with 11 digs, six kills, and three blocks. Amanda White (Watertown, NY/Watertown) added seven kills, three service aces, and three blocks. Sara Martin (Rochester, NY/West Irondequoit) had eight kills and seven digs, while Lindsay Quandt (Houston, TX/Houston Christian) added 14 digs. Abby Higgins (Peru, NY/Peru) chipped in with eight digs.

Chelsea Beecher led the Golden Flyers with 15 digs, 11 kills, and five service aces. Madi Wickens dished out 30 assists.

Against Hilbert, RIT appeared to be cruising, winning the first two sets by identical 25-17 scores. The Tigers could not get that elusive third set victory, as Hilbert stormed back to win the next three 27-25, 25-22, and 15-8.

Szybist slammed a season-best 24 kills, while hitting .308 to go along with three service aces and three blocks. Dowdy led the way with 22 assists to go along with nine digs. Anna Valentine (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon) tied for the team lead with 12 digs, ehile recording eight kills, while Davis also recorded 12 digs. Claire Foggo (Windham, NH/Central Catholic) led the squad with five blocks.

The Tigers play Geneseo to complete pool play at the Golden Flyer Invitational on Saturday at 10 a.m. They will then play a to be determined opponent at either 2 or 4 p.m.
