ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT baseball team (12-23, 7-15 Liberty League) split a doubleheader at Towers Field against the University of Rochester (16-22, 10-14 Liberty League) on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. The Tigers took game one, 5-3 and then fell in the second game, 5-4 in 10 innings.
RIT was led by
Walt Roman (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) in the opener, who went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and a walk.
Ronnie Canestro (East Amherst, NY/Nichols) and
Brian Brazee (Auburn, NY/Auburn) each had two RBI's and #C.J. Bolorin# added two hits and two runs scored.
RIT scored twice in each of the first two innings and never looked back.
Ethan Humbert (Rose, NY/North Rose-Wolcott) improved to 3-4 on the season, throwing a complete game and allowing only three runs and seven hits.
The Tigers totaled three stolen bases and three hit batters in the victory.
Game two featured a pitchers duel between
Brandon Cohall (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas) and Rob Mabee. Cohall went six strong innings, allowing only four hits and two runs while striking out four batters. However, Mabee was a little better, going eight innings and allowing only one earned run.
Each team tallied a run in the second inning. Brazee led off the innings with a double down the left field line and advanced to third on a ground out.
Brett Kajganich (North Royalton, OH/Holy Name) grounded out to second, scoring Brazee. Rochester answered with an RBI single from Lance Hamilton.
RIT took the lead in the fourth as
Skip Flanagan (Framingham, MA/Bishop Feehan) scored on an error but the Yellowjackets would tie it up in the bottom of the fifth. Flanagan scored another unearned run in the top of the sixth, giving the Tigers a 3-2 lead.
Rory Little (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) struggled in the seventh allowing two runs without giving up a hit. He hit two batters and threw two wild pitches as Rochester claimed the 4-3 lead.
The Tigers rallied in the top of the ninth.
Taylor Hogan (Rochester, NY/Brighton) began the rally with a one out single and Kajganich followed with a base hit of his own. After a wild pitch advanced the runners,
Tyler Ramotar (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) was walked intentionally. Bolorin made Rochester pay, hitting a sacrifice fly to centerfield, tying the score.
Rochester pulled out the victory in the 10th inning as Nate Mulberg reached on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded, scoring Sam Slutsky with the winning run.
The two teams return to action with a doubleheader at Tiger Stadium tomorrow beginning at noon. The games will wrap up conference play for both squads.
