POTSDAM, NY - For the second consecutive afternoon, the RIT baseball team (7-6, 2-4 Liberty League) earned a doubleheader split against Clarkson University on Sunday afternoon, The Golden Knights took game one, 2-1, while the Tigers rebounded to win game two, 5-3 at Jack Phillips Stadium at Snell Field.
In game one, Clarkson, who served as the road team for both contests, scored a run in the top of the first and one in the third to take a 2-0 lead. RIT cut Clarkson's lead in half with a run in the bottom of the sixth, but could not push the tying run across.
Clarkson went up 1-0 in the first, as Matt Jenack hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring David Wixted, who led off by getting hit with a pitch and then stole second and third. In the third, Greg Jasek singled home John Coleman.
RIT scored its lone run in the sixth, as
Tyler Ramotar (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) was hit by a pitch, then moved to second on a single by
Jaren Bell (Rochester, NY/Brighton). Both runners moved up on a base hit by
Skip Flanagan (Framingham, MA/Bishop Feehan), which loaded the bases.
Brian Brazee (Auburn, NY/Auburn) drove in Ramotar with a sacrifice fly to center field. RIT could not add on in the inning however, as
Ronnie Canestro (East Amherst, NY/Nichols) flew out to end the threat.
In the seventh,
Walt Roman (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) led off with a single and advanced to third two batters later, but was stranded there to end the contest.
Bryan Chudy won the pitching duel for Clarkson, allowing just four hits, while striking out five and walking none in the complete game effort. RIT's
Tyler Leichtenberger (Warren, PA/Warren Area) was very good in defeat, also throwing a complete game, allowing just six hits, while walking one and strikong out three batters. It was RIT's third straight complete game thrown by its pitching staff.
In game two, RIT jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, then rallied from a 3-2 deficit with three runs in the bottom of the seventh to take the 5-3 lead. From there, RIT was able to hang on and get the win.
Down 3-2 in the seventh,
Matt Holtby (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) led off with an infield single and left the game for pinch runner
CJ Bolorin (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta). After Bolorin was erased on a fielder's choice by
Taylor Hogan (Rochester, NY/Brighton) and a pop up from
Brett Kajganich (North Royalton, OH/Holy Name),
Jaren Bell (Rochester, NY/Brighton) singled, putting runners on first and second with two outs. Canestro then delivered with a double to right center, plating Hogan and Bell, giving RIT a 4-3 lead. Flanagan knocked in Canestro with a single to complete the scoring.
From there, RIT starter
Rory Little (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) got a 1-2-3 eighth inning and gave way to
Seth Noreman (Old Bethpage, NY/Old Bethpage-JFK), who retired his three batters faced in order with a strikeout to record his first collegiate save. Little scattered 10 hits and allowed two earned runs in eight innings to record his second victory of the season.
Offensively, Bell was 2-for-4 with a run scored and run batted in. Flanagan had two hits and a RBI, while Hogan scored a pair of runs.
Walt Roman (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) was 1-for-2 getting hit by a pitch twice, while stealing two bases.
John Coleman had three hits and a stolen base in the loss for Clarkson. Jasek allowed a pair of unearned runs in five innings of work for the Golden Knights, but did not factor into the decision.
The Tigers are right back on the road Tuesday with a doubleheader at conference foe Skidmore that begins at 1 p.m. The games were originally scheduled for March 23 and 24, but were washed out due to rain and snow.
