ROCHESTER, NY - The RIT baseball team (11-20) dropped a pair of non-conference home games to Oswego State (23-13) from sun-drenched Tiger Stadium on Tuesday afternoon. The Lakers took game one, 15-4, then annexed game two by a score of 5-4.
In game one, Oswego put the game out of reach quickly by scoring four runs in the first inning and six more in the second to go up 10-0. The Lakers eventually led 12-0 before RIT scored twice in each of the fourth and fifth innings.
The Lakers lashed 19 hits in the opener. Ed Charles led the way by going 4-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Andrew Lazzaro was 3-for-3 with five RBI's, while Brian Hamilton was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three runs driven in. Four Laker pitchers combined on the win. Starter Adam Bishop earned the win by going two scoreless innings, allowing a hit.
Jaren Bell (Rochester, NY/Brighton) and
Skip Flanagan (Framingham, MA/Bishop Feehan) both had a pair of hits, run scored, and run batted in for the Tigers.
Walt Roman (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) and
Greg Schworm (Rochester, NY/Churchville Chili) both added run scoring singles.
Conor Herlihy (Geneseo, NY/Geneseo) started and took the loss on the mound.
Ryan Hanula (Lanoka Harbor, NJ/Lacey Township) made his second collegiate appearance, throwing the final four innings in relief.
In game two, Oswego jumped out a 5-0 lead, before RIT roared back with the game's final four runs, three coming in the bottom of the third.
Mike McMullen doubled home two runs in the top of the first inning to give the Lakers a lead they would not relinquish. In the third the Lakers tacked on three more runs, two coming on a single by Tyler Smith.
The Tigers roared back in the bottom half of the inning, scoring three times on a pair of hits to cut the Lakers lead to 5-3. In the fifth, Roman singled home
Ronnie Canestro (East Amherst, NY/Nichols) to cut the Lakers lead to 5-4, but the Tigers could not push the tying run across.
McMullen doubled twice in the win, while Scott Buniak for was 2-for-4 with a stolen base and run scored. Six Oswego pitchers comibined on the win. Starter Mike Kelly earned the win, firing two scoreless innings. Closer Ryan Donovan pitched a perfect seventh inning to record his fourth save of the season.
Canestro was 3-for-4 with a run scored and batted in for the Tigers in the nightcap.
Zach Zabel (Clarence, NY/Clarence) was 2-for-3. RIT starter
Chris Dickinson (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) took the loss, allowing four earned runs in three innings. Sophomore
Rich Sammon (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield) was brilliant in relief, allowing just two hits, while striking out three batters in four scoreless innings.
RIT is right back in action on Wednesday, with a pair of games against St. John Fisher that will played at Colburn Park in Newark, NY. Game one of the doubleheader will played at 6 p.m.
