ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT baseball team (11-18, 6-14 Liberty League) earned a split in Sunday's doubleheader against Vassar (14-16-1, 10-12 Liberty League). In game one, Vassar recorded the 8-4 win. RIT's bats awoke in game two, erupting for 19 hits and 20 runs in a 20-0 win. It is the most runs scored for RIT in a Liberty League game and largest margin of victory for a shutout in school history.

Like yesterday, the visiting team erupted for four runs in the top of the first in game one. This time, it was RIT doing the damage to get out in front early. CJ Bolorin (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta) reached on an infield single, then Jaren Bell (Rochester, NY/Brighton) reached when his sacrifice bunt was mishandled by Mrlik. After a walk to Ronnie Canestro (East Amherst, NY/Nichols) loaded the bases, Taylor Hogan (Rochester, NY/Brighton) doubled down the right field line to score two runs. Walt Roman (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) drove in Canestro with a ground out to second. Brian Brazee (Auburn, NY/Auburn) finished the onslaught by driving in Hogan with a single to right center field.

After that however, Vassar starting pitcher Zander Mrlik settled down nicely, holding the Tigers scoreless and hitless the rest of the way. He allowed three hits and an unearned run in a 76-pitch complete game effort. Mrlik fired five 1-2-3 innings, retiring the final 10 batters he faced to earn his fifth win of the year.

Vassar chipped away, scoring two runs in each of the second and third innings to tie the game at 4. In the fifth, the Brewers erupted for three more runs off RIT starter Ethan Humbert (Rose, NY/North Rose-Wolcott) to take a 7-4 lead, then tacked on an insurance run in the sixth for the final scoring of game one.

Sean Morash was 2-for-3 with a towering two-run home run in the second inning to lead the way offensively for Vassar. Brooks English was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs and a run batted in, while Nick Johnson continued his hot weekend, going 2-for-3 with a run scored and RBI. Dave Robbins drove in three runs for the Brewers.

Humbert allowed seven runs in five innings, while Rich Sammon (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield) pitched the sixth inning, striking out two batters. Humbert walked four batters in today's game, nearly equaling how many he walked (six) in 39 innings entering the contest.

In game two, RIT's bats exploded for 19 hits and 20 runs, both second most in one game this season. The Tigers scored four times in the third, five in the fourth, added a run in the fifth, then put up eight runs in the eighth inning, and closed out the scoring with a pair in the final frame.

Ten different Tigers had a least one hit in game two, seven of who had at least two hits. The Tigers slugged seven extra base hits.

Skip Flanagan (Framingham, MA/Bishop Feehan) led the way offensively for the Tigers, going 3-for-5 with a single, double, and triple, tying his career-high with six RBI's. Roman hit his first home run of the season, a towering blast that just hooked inside the foul pole in left field to in the fourth inning. He also added a triple and scored twice. Hogan was 3-for-5 with a double, two runs scored, and three RBI's.

Canestro was also among the offensive leaders in game two for the Tigers, going 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and three RBI's, while Bolorin and Zach Zabel (Clarence, NY/Clarence) scored three runs apiece. Bell and Brett Kajganich (North Royalton, OH/Holy Name) scored two runs each, while Matt Holtby (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) added a pair of hits and RBI. Wesley Calkins (Woodstock, GA/Walker School) added a run scoring single in the eighth inning.

RIT starter Brandon Cohall (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas) wiggled out of some early inning trouble to throw his first collegiate shutout, scattering seven hits, while striking out five in the 135-pitch, nine inning effort.

Lawrence Flicker took the loss for Vassar, lasting three innings. The Brewers used six pitchers in the contest. Seven different players had a hit for Vassar in the nightcap.

It is the second time this season that RIT scored 20 runs in a game. On Feb. 27, RIT scored a program record 22 runs in a 22-1 win over SUNY Canton.

Vassar is now 6-4 all-time against RIT. Yesterday; Vassar won both games in the doubleheader by scores of 9-0 and 5-4 in 10 innings.

The Tigers are right back in action on Tuesday, hosting SUNY Oswego in a doubleheader that gets underway at 2 p.m.
