Baseball drops both in doubleheader at Rensselaer

TROY, NY - The RIT baseball team (9-10, 4-8 Liberty League) was swept in a double header at RPI (17-7, 9-5) on Sunday afternoon. The Engineers took all four games from the Tigers this weekend. RIT lostg game one, 5-4, and dropped game two, 23-5.

In the opener, the Engineers jumped out to a 3-0 lead after three innings and held a 5-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth. The Tigers would narrow the gap thanks to a two run double from Skip Flanagan (Framingham, MA/Bishop Feehan) to cut the deficit to 5-3.

RIT rallied in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, Brett Kajganich (North Royalton, OH/Holy Name) doubled to right center, forcing the Engineers to go to the bullpen. Ash Rao entered an threw a wild pitch advancing Kajganich to third. Ronnie Canestro (East Amherst, NY/Nichols) walked, putting the tying run on base. Flangan laced a RBI single to right and Canestro advanced to third. However, Flanagan was picked off first by Rao and Brian Brazee (Auburn, NY/Auburn) grounded out to shortstop leave the tying run only 90 feet away.

Tyler Leichtenberger (Warren, PA/Warren Area) took the loss, going five innings and allowing four runs on five hits while walking four and striking out two. Conor Herilhy went two hitless innings of relief and struck out one.

Jaren Bell (Rochester, NY/Brighton) and Taylor Hogan (Rochester, NY/Brighton) combined to go 5-for-7 with a run and an RBI and Flangan finished 2-for-4 with three RBI's.

Game two was dominated by the Engineers, who pounded out 28 hits and scored 23 runs.

RPI scored two runs in the top of the first to take a 2-0 lead. Flanagan laced a RBI single in the bottom of the frame to cut the lead to 2-1.

The Tigers tied it in the bottom of the third on a Kajganich sacrifice fly, scoring Hogan. Each team plated three runners in the fourth inning. Walt Roman (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) hit a two-run single and then stole second and came around to score on a ground out by Hogan.

RPI blew the game open with eight runs in the fifth inning on five hits as seven straight batters reached base safely in the rally.

For the game, seven different batters drove in a run for RPI, led by Jared Jensen who drove in four. Adam Kalish earned the win in relief, firing five innings and allowing no runs on two hits.

For the Tigers, Rory Little (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) took the loss, allowing seven earned runs in 4 1/3 innings of work.

RIT returns to action on Saturday as they host Union College at 1 p.m. The games mark RIT's first Liberty League doubleheader of the season that will be played at Tiger Stadium.
