Women's basketball runs winning streak to three games; defeats Penn St. Behrend 44-43

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The RIT women's basketball team (8-12) ran its winning streak to three games in a hard fought 44-43 victory over Penn St. Behrend in non-conference play at Clark Gym on Tuesday evening as 140 girls from the Rochester City School District were on hand to root the Tigers on as part of the National Girls and Women in Sports Day.

#Mallory Apperson (Bemus Point, NY/Maple Grove)# scored the game-winning basket with 2:26 remaining in regulation to give the Tigers a 44-42 lead that they wouldn't relinquish.

#Leslie Havens (Wayland, NY/Wayland-Cohocton)# paced the Tigers with nine points in the defensive battle.

Holly Bourquin added a game-high 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Lions (13-8).

RIT's swarming defense forced the Lions into 23 turnovers and held Penn St. Behrend to 6-for-32 (18.8 percent) shooting from the field in the second half.

The Tigers trailed by as many as seven in the second half but allowed the Lions only one field goal over the games final 9:20. An Emily Detsch three-pointer gave Penn. St. Behrend a 40-35 lead but the Lions would go 1-for-15 with four turnovers down the stretch to allow the Tigers to cut into the lead. Havens' jumper with 7:20 remaining gave RIT their first lead since a 5-3 advantage at the 17:03 mark of the first half.

Bourquin hit a layup to even the score at 42 with just over four minutes remaining. Two minutes later, Apperson would grab an offensive rebound and finish in the lane for the decisive basket.

Bourquin had a chance to pull the Lions even, but went 1-for-2 from the free throw line with 41 seconds remaining. The Lions final chance came with seven seconds remaining, but #Madeline Apperson (Bemus Point, NY/Maple Grove)# intercepted the inbounds pass to seal the victory.

This was RIT's first ever win over the Lions. The Tigers were 0-5 all-time against Penn St. Behrend, including last year's 72-58 defeat in Erie, Pa.

The Tigers look to continue their winning streak as they return to Liberty League action on Friday Feb. 8 when they travel to Bard for a 6 p.m. contest.
