AUBURNDALE, FL - The RIT baseball team set a program record for most runs scored in a game, rolling to a resounding 22-1 win over SUNY Canton on Wednesday afternoon at Chain of Lakes Park. RIT scored 21 runs in a game two previous times, once in 1957 vs. Roberts Wesleyan, and the other in 1976 vs. SUNY Geneseo. The 21 run margin of victory is also the highest in school history.
The Tigers scored six runs in the second inning, three in the third, three in the fifth, and eight times in the sixth frame. RIT scored single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to close out the scoring. RIT slammed 20 hits and tied a signle-game record by getting hit by a pitch six times, and drew four walks.
The Tigers scored a remarkable 17 runs with two outs, including all six runs in the second inning, three in the fifth, and the eight runs in the sixth inning. The Tigers took advantage of five Canton errors to score 11 unearned runs.
Twelve different Tigers had at least a hit. First baseman
Skip Flanagan (Framingham, MA/Bishop Feehan) was 2-for-6 with a double, and career-high six runs batted in to go along with three runs scored. He had a three run double in the second inning, sacrifice fly in the fourth, and two-run single in the fifth.
Freshman
Taylor Hogan (Rochester, NY/Brighton) was 2-for-2 with two RBI's and two runs scored, while
CJ Bolorin (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta) was 2-for-3 with two RBI's and two runs scored. Catcher
Matt Holtby (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) scored a career-high three runs, while adding two hits.
Walt Roman (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) was 2-for-3, while getting hit by a pitch for the fourth time in three games this season.
Freshman
Zach Zabel (Clarence, NY/Clarence) recorded his first collegiate hit, run scored, and run batted in. Fellow freshman
Brett Kajganich (North Royalton, OH/Holy Name) was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, and a run batted in. Andrew Highes scored twice and drove in two runs.
On the mound,
Tyler Leichtenberger (Warren, PA/Warren Area) was the winner for RIT, allowing just three hits and one run, while striking out five batters and walking none.
Rich Sammon (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield),
Conor Herlihy (Geneseo, NY/Geneseo), and
Reuben Brenner-Adams (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca (Lehman Alternative)) combined to throw three scoreless innings in relief.
The Tigers are right back in action on Thursday, with a single game against Milwaukee Scjool of Engineering that gets underway at 2:30 p.m.
