Women's basketball places seventh with win over Nazareth in Wendy's College Classic consolation round



BROCKPORT, NY -- Senior forward #Kayla Wheeler (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa)# scored 20 points to lead the No. 6 RIT (3-4) women's basketball team to a 79-62 win over No. 8 Nazareth College (2-5) to take seventh place in the 21st Annual Wendy's College Classic from SUNY Brockport on Saturday afternoon. Wheeler scored 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the Tigers, earning All-Tournament second team honors.

RIT shot 50.8 percent from the floor on 30-of-59 shooting, including 7-of-14 from behind the arc. The Tigers went 12-of-21 from the foul line and held a 40-32 rebounding edge. #Jess Kramer (Fayetteville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt)# scored 13 points and dished out five assists, while #Ashlynn Palmitesso (Fulton, NY/G. Ray Bodley) and Maria Edwards (Forrest Hill, MD/The Carroll School)# each scored nine for the the Tigers.

RIT fell behind by five points early in the first half on a three pointer from Nazareth's Veronica Peck. The Tigers responded with a 13-5 run, taking a 16-13 lead on an old fashioned three-point play by Kramer with 10:26 to play.

The Tigers outscored the Golden Flyers 30-14 over the final 11:34 of the first half, leading 43-27 at the break. RIT shot 51.7 percent from the floor in the first half, as Wheeler led the way with 13 points. Kramer added 10 points for the Tigers while dishing out two assists.

The Tigers built on their halftime lead in the second half, leading by as many as 22 points. RIT shot 50 percent from the floor on 15-of-30 shooting. Nazareth got as close as 12 points on a free throw by Peck with 5:38 to play, but RIT would pull away for the win.

RIT scored 24 of its 79 points in the paint and tallied 13 points off of 11 Nazareth turnovers.

Nazareth shot 32.1 percent from the floor on 17-of-53 shooting. Julia Brew led Nazareth with 20 points, while Maria Allocco added 10 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.

The Tigers are off until January 3 when they open Liberty League play by hosting Union College at 6 p.m. on the floor at Clark Gymnasium.
