Women's basketball loses to Brockport in overtime in Wendy's Classic consolation round



ROCHESTER, NY – The No. 6 RIT (2-4) women's basketball team lost a heartbreaker to No.7 SUNY Brockport (4-1) 61-57 in overtime in the consolation round of the 21st Annual Wendy's College Classic Thursday night at Clark Gym. RIT will face Nazareth College in the seventh place game on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. on the campus of SUNY Brockport.

Brockport's Faith Welch made two free throws with 57 seconds to play in overtime to break a 57-57 tie an help the Golden Eagles to the win.

RIT shot 23.6 percent from the floor on 17-of-72 shooting. The Tigers made just 1-of-14 three-point field goals, and were 22-of-26 from the foul line. #Kayla Wheeler (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) and Courtney Tennant (Cortland, NY/Cortland) led RIT with 12 points apiece. (Fulton, NY/G. Ray Bodley)Ashlynn Palmitesso (Fulton, NY/G. Ray Bodley)# scored 11 points and had 10 rebounds.

The Tigers held a 56-45 rebounding edge and scored 14 points off of 22 Brockport turnovers.

Brockport shot 33.9 percent from the floor on 19-of-56 shooting. The Golden Eagles went 6-of-20 from three-point land and were 17-of-26 from the free throw line. Faith Welch led Brockport with 20 points. Hannah Rehbaum scored 15 points, while Bree Fortney chipped in 10 points and eight rebounds for the Golden Eagles.

The Tigers took a six point lead with 8:54 to play in the first half when Palmitesso drained a three pointer off an assist from #Maria Edwards (Forrest Hill, MD/The Carroll School)# that gave the Tigers a 17-11 lead.

A pair of #Christina Pensabene (Fulton, NY/G. Ray Bodley)# free throws with 7:36 to play in the first half gave RIT a 19-14 lead. But Brockport closed out the first half with a 9-3 run, leading 23-22 at the break.

RIT opened the second half on a 10-5 run, taking a 33-28 lead on a pair of #Jess Kramer (Fayetteville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt)# free throws with 15:25 to play in regulation.

The Golden Eagles answered with a 17-6 run of its own, taking a 45-39 lead on a three pointer by Fortney with 6:13 to play.

A 6-0 burst by the Tigers tied the game with 5:03 to play on a two free throws by Tennant at the 5:03 mark of the second half.

With RIT trailing by one, freshman point guard #Sydney Frank (Haverford, PA/Friends' Central)# was fouled by Fortney going to the hoop. Frank missed the first, but stepped in and drained the second, tying the score at 50-50.

Politesse slipped to the hoop and laid the ball in on RIT's first possession in overtime off a nice feed from Kramer giving RIT a slim 52-50 lead.

Every time RIT would score, Brockport seemed to answer right back. Fortney and Welch provided the spark for the Golden Eagles.

With time winding down in the overtime, Welch was fouled by Wheeler and drained both free throws giving Brockport a 58-57 lead.

After a free throw by Rehbaum made it 59-57 Brockport, Wheeler had a great look from the top of the key at a three pointer, but it barely missed and Brockport was able to knock down their free throws to secure the win.

Brockport will face William Smith College in the fifth place game on Saturday at 3 p.m.
