GENEVA, NY -- The RIT (8-7-3, 3-4-1 Liberty League) men's soccer team closed out the 2013 regular season with a 3-0 shut out at Hobart College (11-7-1, 3-4-1 Liberty League) on Saturday afternoon at Cozzens Field on the campus of Hobart and William Smith Colleges.
Shots were 14-12 in favor of the Statesmen. RIT took seven corner kicks to six for Hobart.
Mark Reeves (Macedon, NY/Palmyra-Macedon) took the loss in net for RIT, making four saves. Mike Lucas played the first half in goal for Hobart stopped the only shot he faced and picked up the win. Tyler Serafine came in for the second half and saved all four shots he faced to help Hobart clinch the shutout.
Hobart took a 1-0 lead in 15th minute on Charlie Kelly's fourth goal of the season. He took a free kick from the left side of the field. He lined his shot into the box, andtook an odd bounce into the far corner of the goal.
Just 2:38 later, Hobart was awarded another free kick again on the left side of the field about 15 yards out from the box. In a play that looked very similar to Hobart's first goal, Kelly again lofted the kick into the box. Reeves punched the ball away, but Joe Busuttil was there to head home the rebound to make it 2-0 Statesmen.
In the 61st minute, JP White made it 3-0 Statesmen with his second goal this season. DJ Clark pushed a pass ahead to White, who carried the ball into the box and fired a shot into the back of the net.
The Tigers came inches away from scoring with 16:42 remaining in the match when
Sean Heinze (Shrewsbury, MA/Shrewsbury) blasted a shot on goal that banged off the crossbar. With 13:50 remaining,
Matt Miles (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) put a hard shot on goal from 10 yards outside of the box, but Serafine laid out for the diving stop.
The game was the final match of the regular season for both teams.
