Women's basketball falls short in Max Ziel Championship, falling to host Oswego State



OSWEGO, NY - The RIT women's basketball team (1-1) jumped out to a double-digit first half lead, but could not hold off the hosts, falling to Oswego State (2-0) by a score of 87-74 in the 2013 Max Ziel Tournament Championsip on Saturday afternoon.

RIT led 28-16 midway through the first half, but the Lakers chipped away to cut the RIT lead to 35-32 at the break. It was all Lakers in the second half, as they outscored RIT, 55-39.

Jenn Robbins led Oswego with a game-high 30 points, shooting 10-for-17 from the field to go aling with four made 3-pointers and four assists. Heather Herbert added 19 points and 14 boards, while Lauren Nunziato had 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field.

#Courtney Tennant (Cortland, NY/Cortland) and Ashlynn Palmitesso (Fulton, NY/G. Ray Bodley)# led the Tigers with 20 points apiece in the loss. Tennant added 12 boards, while Palmitesso was 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. #Jess Kramer (Fayetteville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt)# added 12 points and five boards, while #Maria Edwards (Forrest Hill, MD/The Carroll School)# dished out a team-best three assists.

#Sydney Frank (Haverford, PA/Friends' Central) and Julia Bender (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) scored her first collegiate baskets in the loss. Senior (Fulton, NY/G. Ray Bodley)Mallory Apperson (Bemus Point, NY/Maple Grove)# added eight boards.

Oswego shot 45.9 percent (28-for-61) from the field, while RIT shot 35.4 percent (28-for-79). Oswego attempted 35 free throws to just 18 for the Tigers. RIT did win the battle of the boards, 49-44, grabbing 21 offensive caroms, leading to 22 second chance points.

The Tigers are right back in action on Tuesday, with a road contest at Houghton College that gets underway at 6 p.m.
