OSWEGO, NY - Four players scored in double figures, as the RIT women's basketball team (1-0) opened the 2013-14 season with a resounding 87-49 win over SUNY Cobleskill in a battle of the Tigers at the Max Ziel Tournament hosted by Oswego State University on Friday afternoon.
Sophomore #
Ashlynn Palmitesso (Fulton, NY/G. Ray Bodley)# recorded career-highs of 23 points and nine rebounds in just 20 minutes of play. She hot 9-for-14 from the field and drained a pair of 3-pointers. She scored 14 of her 23 points in the first half.
Senior center #
Courtney Tennant (Cortland, NY/Cortland)# tallied a double-double with 18 points and 14 rebounds. She added three assists and a block in just 24 minutes of play. Tennant scored 14 of her 18 points over the opening half of play.
Seniors #
Jess Kramer (Fayetteville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) and
Mallory Apperson (Bemus Point, NY/Maple Grove)# also tallied in double figures, scoring 15 and 13 points, respectively. Kramer added six boards, a team-high five assists, and three steals, while making three 3-pointers. Apperson added five boards and a pair of assists.
The Tigers used a 13-0 run to pull away in the first half and build a 30-9 lead. RIT would lead 47-21 at the break. In the second half, RIT scored the first 14 points to cap off a 20-0 run and lead 61-21 on a layup by Palmitesso with 16:20 left. RIT would lead by as many as 51 points, 81-30 with 9:22 remaining in the second half on a layup by Apperson.
All 12 Tigers played at least nine minutes. #

RIT won the battle of the boards, 64-49. RIT shot 41 percent from the field in the first half and 37 percent in the second half. RIT took advantage of 24 Cobleskill turnovers to score 27 points and scored 52 points in the paint.
Shelby Preston led SUNY Cobleskill with 21 points and 11 rebounds, while Tracee Schiebel added 13 points.
The Tigers will play Oswego State in the Max Ziel Championship game at 4 p.m. on Saturday. Oswego cruised to a 76-60 victory over Clarkson in the other Ziel semifinal.
