Women's hockey completes historic weekend sweep over Robert Morris with 2-1 win

PITTSBURGH, PA – For the second time in less than 24 hours, the RIT women's hockey team (9-9-3, 4-3-3 CHA) recorded a 2-1 win at College Hockey America foe Robert Morris (9-5-2, 5-3-0 CHA) at 84 Lumber Arena on Friday evening. It is RIT's first weekend sweep against a CHA opponent at the Division I level. With the win, RIT moves into second place in the league standings with 11 points.

RIT is now riding a four-game unbeaten streak (3-0-1), allowing just four goals over that span.

RIT Head Coach Scott McDonald is happy with how is team is progressing in its first season at the Division I level.

"This was a complete weekend for us," said McDonald. "Like anything, it takes time to adjust to something new, and Division I is new for us. We gained valuable experience during the first half of the season which helped us this weekend. Combine that with our big game experienced gained (at Division III) over the last years and hopefully this gets us ready for a strong second half."

#Tenecia Hiller (Brampton, Ontario/Brampton Thunder) and Marissa Maugeri (Ajax, Ontario/Durham West Lightning)# scored for the Tigers, who were out-shot by the Colonials, 32-20. In net, #Ali Binnington (Oakville, Ontario/Mississauga Chiefs)# was tremendous for the second straight day, stopping 31-of-32 shots to earn the game's first star and her seventh win of the season.  She stopped 60-of-62 shots over the weekend. She improves to 7-4-2 with a 2.08 goals against average and .922 save percentage.

Kelsey Thomas scored Robert Morris' lone goal. Kristen DiCiocco made 18 saves in defeat for the Colonials, who drop to third place in the CHA standings, one point behind the Tigers.

Thomas gave Robert Morris' the quick 1-0 lead, just 3:23 into the first period off assists from Leah Carlson and Rebecca Vint. Vint found Carlson, who came in alone on a breakaway. Carlson fired, but Binnington made the save. The rebound came to Thomas, who was able to put the puck in to give the Colonials the lead.

Hiller tied the game at the 12:07 mark of the period, as she redirected a point shot from #Kristina Moss (Webster, NY/Buffalo Bisons) past DiCiocco for her sixth goal of the season. (Woodstock, Ontario/Waterloo K-W Rangers)Kim Schlattman (Stratford, Ontario/Cambridge Fury)# won a face-off cleanly back to Moss at the left point. The senior defenseman wristed a shot towards the net that Hiller redirected out of mid-air for the power-play tally.

It was RIT's fourth straight game with a power-play goal.

The Tigers scored the eventual game-winning tally just 1:18 into the second period, as #Erin Zach (Elmira, Ontario/Cambridge Fury)# won a face-off back to Bromley, whose shot from left point deflected off the stick of Maugeri in front and past DiCiocco for her second goal of the season.

Binnington was the story from there, making several big saves to keep the Colonials off the board.

RIT's defense stiffened in the third period, allowing just five shots on goal to finish off the weekend sweep. The Tigers were 1-for-2 on the power-play, while holding Robert Morris scoreless in three power-play attempts.

RIT leads the all-time series between the two schools 3-2-0. The two teams met three teams between 2007 and 2008. RIT and Robert Morris will meet for a second weekend series on Jan. 26-27 at Ritter Arena.

Last night, Schlattman and #Kourtney Kunichika (Fullerton, CA/LA Selects) became the ninth and tenth players to reach the 100-point milestone in the 2-1 win over RMU. (Woodstock, Ontario/Waterloo K-W Rangers)Lindsay Grigg (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Hornets)# scored the game-winning goal with 5:00 left to break the tie. Binnington made 29 saves

RIT returns home for a five-game home stand. On Saturday, the Tigers host ECAC foe Colgate at 2 p.m.
