Schlattman and Kunichika hit 100-point milestone in dramatic win at Robert Morris

PITTSBURGH, PA - Senior captain #Kim Schlattman (Stratford, Ontario/Cambridge Fury) and junior (Woodstock, Ontario/Waterloo K-W Rangers)Kourtney Kunichika (Fullerton, CA/LA Selects)# became the ninth and tenth players in the history of the RIT women's hockey program to record 100 career points, as the Tigers (8-9-3, 3-3-3 CHA) picked up its biggest win as a Division I program to date, 2-1 at College Hockey America foe Robert Morris (9-4-2, 5-2-0 CHA) at 84 Lumber Arena on Friday evening.

Sophomore #Lindsay Grigg (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Hornets)# made the biggest play of the night however, slamming home a loose puck from in front of the Colonials goal for her first goal of the season with exactly five minutes left in regulation to snap a 1-1 tie.

Schlattman fired a shot from the left side that deflected off #Katie Hubert (Burlington, Ontario/Burlington Barracudas)#, right to Grigg, who was alone in front of the net. Grigg made no mistake, firing the shot past Robert Morris goaltender Kristen DiCiocco.

From there, the RIT defense and goaltender #Ali Binnington (Oakville, Ontario/Mississauga Chiefs)# held strong, keeping the Colonials off the board to secure a big win in conference play. The Tigers are now riding a three-game unbeaten streak.

Binnington was strong in net, stopping 29 shots, improving to 6-4-2 on the season. She made a handful of big saves to keep the game tied at 1-1 late in the second and early in the third period.

RIT Head Coach Scott McDonald was very happy with how his team played tonight, especially off the long layoff.

"It was great to see the team come off the break fresh, as we played with a lot of energy tonight," said McDonald. "I thought we played very smart within our system. Our penalty-killing unit was tremendous, and Ali (Binnington) gave us a chance in net tonight. It was a big win for us."

Kunichika and Schlattman combined on the historic goal with 8:28 left in the second period. #Ariane Yokoyama (Van Nuys, CA/LA Selects)# fired a shot from the point wide that deflected off the back boards to Kunichika at the left side of the Robert Morris goal. Kunichika shoveled a pass across the crease to Schlattman, who was all alone to slip the shot past Colonials goaltender Kristen DiCiocco and tie the game at 1-1.

The goal was Schlattman's team-leading ninth of the season. Schlattman, who had missed RIT's previous four games due to injury, has a goal in each of her last three games played and nine over this season. For her career, Schlattman now has 34 goals and 67 assists in 103 career games. Kunichika is now tied with Schlattman for the team lead in scoring with 12 points in 2012-13 and has career totals of 39 goals and 61 assists in 75 games.

Cobina Delaney scored the lone goal for Robert Morris. In net, DiCiocco made 17 saves.

The Colonials out-shot RIT, 30-19. The RIT penalty-killing unit was tremendous, keeping the Colonials off the board in five chances. RIT killed off a five-minute major penalty early in the third period and then another minor penalty moments after.

Robert Morris led 1-0 after an incredibly quickly played first period of play, in which they held a 6-5 edge in shots.

The Colonials scored the lone goal of the first period with just 53 seconds left, as Delaney redirected a point shot by Kylie St. Louis from the slot past Binnington. RIT disputed the fact that the puck was tipped with a high stick, but to no avail.

"Playing in big games over the last few seasons prepared us for when we took the lead late," said McDonald. "We didn't panic once we got the lead and were able to put the game away."

It is the first time in program history that two women's hockey players recorded 100 career points in the same contest. All 10 of RIT's 100-point scorers have reached the milestone in the last nine seasons.

The all-time series between the two schools is now even at 2-2-0. The two teams met three teams between 2007 and 2008. RIT and Robert Morris will meet for a second weekend series on Jan. 26-27 at Ritter Arena.

The two teams wrap up the weekend series from 84 Lumber Arena on Saturday at 2 p.m.
