GETTYSBURG, PA - The RIT volleyball team (1-1) opened the 2012 season by splitting a pair of matches at the Battlefield Classic hosted by Gettysburg College on Friday. RIT rolled to a three-set victory over Dickinson (0-2) by scores of 25-17, 25-12, 25-19, then fell to Scranton (2-0) in three sets, by scores of 25-22, 25-18, 25-22.
In the opening match against Dickinson, senior
Katie Cooper (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) led the way offensively with eight kills and a career-high seven service aces to go along with four assists, four digs, and two blocks. Freshman
Sara Martin (Rochester, NY/West Irondequoit) slammed eight kills to go along with six digs.
Senior
Christina Worth (Valencia, CA/Valencia) hit 1.000 with six kills, while adding 22 assists, nine digs, and two blocks.
Cat Sullivan (Lehman, PA/Lake-Lehman) hit .571 with four kills and two blocks, while
Suzanne Jokajtys (Boonville, NY/Adirondack) added six digs and four kills. Sophomore
Amanda White (Watertown, NY/Watertown) had three blocks, while classmate
Bethany Davis (Blasdell, NY/Frontier) chipped in with nine digs.
RIT hit .400 in the second set and .323 in set three.
Freshmen
Dana Fang (Armonk, NY/Fox Lane),
Hanna Stokes (Frederick, MD/Urbana), Brianna Neuberger,
Amanda Carroll (Castleton, VA/Wakefield Country Day),
Arielle Pariente (Twinsburg, OH/Twinsburg),
Taylor Harkness (Batavia, NY/Batavia), Tracey Zajac, Martin, and
Abby Higgins (Peru, NY/Peru) all made their collegiate debuts in the opening match.
Against Scranton, White hit .600 with a team-best nine kills in just 15 attempts. Cooper had a team-best 10 digs to go along with seven kills. Worth added 24 assists and nine digs, while Sullivan and Martin had six kills each. Sullivan led the way with three blocks, while hitting .357.
The Tigers conclude play at the Battlefield Classic on Saturday with matches against Penn State Altoona at 10 a.m. and Gallaudet at 12 p.m.
