Baseball falls short in pair of losses at St. Lawrence

The RIT baseball team (12-23, 7-17 Liberty League) dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Liberty League foe St. Lawrence (23-10, 16-7 Liberty League) on a sunny, cloudless, Sunday afternoon at Tom Fay Field. RIT lost game one 15-2, then fell in game two 8-1.

In game one, RIT made five errors that led to nine unearned runs. The Saints scored three unearned runs in the first inning, then exploded for 12 runs over the final three frames, including six in the seventh inning.

Bryan Palermo was 3-for-5 with three runs scored for the Saints, while Paul Piatelli was 2-for-3 with two doubles, two runs scored, and one run driven in. Brian Magovney homered and drove in three runs. Joe Riley allowed 10 hits in six innings, but allowed just one run, while striking out five.

RIT recorded 12 hits, but left 10 runners on base. Jaren Bell (Rochester, NY/Brighton) was 3-for-4 with a stolen base to lead the charge. Jon Meyer (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland) was 2-for-4 with a solo homer, while Tyler Ramotar (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) added a pair of hits. Brian Brazee (Auburn, NY/Auburn) extended his hitting streak to 16 games with a fifth-inning single.  He also drove in RIT's second run in the seventh inning.

Ronnie Canestro (East Amherst, NY/Nichols) allowed just two earned runs in five innings in the loss for the Tigers.

In game two, St. Lawrence out-hit RIT 17-6.

RIT scored its lone run in the bottom of the eighth inning, as #C.J. Bolorin# led off with a double, then moved to third on an infield single by Bell. Kreag Bradley (Victor, NY/Victor) hit a sacrifice fly to score Bolorin.

Brazee had his hitting streak snapped at 16 games, going 0-for-4. Bolorin was 2-for-4. Michael Burns (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta) took the loss on the mound, giving up three earned runs in six innings. Rich Sammon (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield) and Tyler Leichtenberger (Warren, PA/Warren Area) combined to throw three scoreless innings of relief. Sammon struck out four batters in two innings of work.

Matt D'Auteuil was 4-for-5 with two runs scored, while Carter Franz was 3-for-4 with a home run, double, anfd four RBI's. Palermo had three hits and scored three times for the second straight game. On the mound, Andrew Schreyack allowed just four hits and a run, while striking out five batters in eight innings to earn the win.

Yesterday, RIT dropped both games to the Saints by scores of 4-0 and 12-5. RIT has lost six straight contests and trails fourth place Clarkson by four games for the fourth and final spot in the Liberty League Tournament. RIT would need to win its final four Liberty League games to have a chance to advance to the conference tournament.

RIT is back in action on Wednesday with a single, nine-inning contest at St. John Fisher that begins at 4 p.m. RIT finishes the regular season with a pair of doubleheaders against Rochester on Saturday, May 5 and Sunday, May 6. Saturday's doubleheader will be home and start at 11:30 a.m., while Sunday's is away and begins at 12 p.m.
