ROCHESTER, NY - The RIT baseball team (12-19, 7-13 Liberty League) dropped a pair of Liberty League conference games to Clarkson University (15-14, 9-11 Liberty League) on a bonechilling cold, windy, rainy, Sunday afternoon at RIT Field. Clarkson won game one in walk-off fashion, 4-3, then took game two, 9-1.
In game one, RIT trailed 3-1 heading into the top of the seventh inning before rallying to tie the game.
Jaren Bell (Rochester, NY/Brighton) walked and
Kreag Bradley (Victor, NY/Victor) reached on an infield single.
Walt Roman (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) hit a deep fly ball to left field that went off the left field fence for a double, allowing both runners to score, tying the game at 3-3.
Clarkson would win the game in the bottom half of the inning, as David Wixted singled to right field, driving in John Coleman, who led off the inning with a single of his own.
David Kinney, who was also 2-for-3 at the plate, earned his third win of the season on the mound, allowing six hits and three unearned runs, while striking out four batters.
Wixted was 2-for-3 with three runs batted in, while Coleman was 2-for-4 with two runs scored for the Golden Knights.
Six different Tigers had a hit. Roman was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI's.
Ronnie Canestro (East Amherst, NY/Nichols) took the loss on the mound, allowing eight hits and striking out two in the complete-game effort.
In game two, Clarkson pitcher Jerry Coleman shut down the RIT bats, allowing just six hits and one run, while striking out six batters in eight innings to pick up his second win. Brian Hopkins pitched a scoreless ninth inning.
Clarkson scored single runs in the first, second, and fourth innings, then broke the game open with five runs on five hits in the fifth inning.
Justin Rebhun had the big blast in the fifth, a bases-clearing double, driving in three runs.
Kinney was 3-for-5 with two RBI's, while Scott Morrisey was 2-for-4 with two RBI's. Tim Beninati was 2-for-3 with a run scored and driven in.
Skip Flanagan (Framingham, MA/Bishop Feehan) had two hits for the Tigers.
Brian Brazee (Auburn, NY/Auburn) had one hit in each game, extending his hitting streak to 13 games.
RIT returns to action next weekend with a pair of doubleheaders at Liberty League foe St. Lawrence. The two games on Saturday begin at 1 p.m., while Sunday's contests get underway at 12 p.m.
