SCHENECTADY, NY - For the second straight day, the RIT baseball team (7-10, 3-5 Liberty League) earned a split at Liberty League foe Union (9-6, 5-3 Liberty League) on Sunday afternoon, finishing just ahead of the rain. RIT won game one 2-1, while Union won the nightcap, 7-1.
In game one, RIT scored a single run in both the third and fourth innings, and sophomore hurler
Ron Canestro (East Amherst, NY/Nichols) did the rest, allowing just six hits and a single run, while striking out seven in six innings to earn his second win of the season and lower his earned run average to 1.23. Sophomore
Tyler Leichtenberger (Warren, PA/Warren Area) pitched a hitless seventh inning to record his RIT single-season record fifth save of the season.
Union scored first in the third inning, but the Tigers responded in the bottom half of the frame.
Jaren Bell (Rochester, NY/Brighton) led off with a single, moved to third on a sacrifice and a ground out and scored on an inflield single by
Kreag Bradley (Victor, NY/Victor).
RIT took the lead for good in the fourth, as
Brian Brazee (Auburn, NY/Auburn) and
Greg Schworm (Rochester, NY/Churchville Chili) led off with singles. After a fielders choice,
Tyler Ramotar (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) singled in Brazee to give RIT a 2-1 edge.
Canestro stranded runners on second and third with two outs in the fifth, while Leichtenberger stranded the tying run at third in the seventh.
Both teams had six hits. Bradley was 2-for-3 to lead the Tigers. David Peretti was 2-for-3 to lead Union. Andrew Beaule took the loss on the mound for the Dutchmen, allowing just six hits, while striking out seven in the complete game effort.
In game two, RIT hurler
Skip Flanagan (Framingham, MA/Bishop Feehan) struck out a season-high 10 batters in 7 2/3 innings, but did not receive any offensive support.
RIT scored its lone run in the bottom of the sixth, as
Walt Roman (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) singled and scored on a single by Ramotar, who had two hits in the game. Roman finished 2-for-3 and was hit by a pitch in each game, giving him nine for the season. Roman leads the squad with a .503 on-base percentage and .528 slugging percentage this season.
#C.J. Bolorin# also had two hits for the Tigers.
Union scored twice in the third and broke the game open with three runs in the top of the ninth. Dylan Katz-Wicks was 3-for-4 with a double and three runs batted in, while Peretti hit a two-run home run.
Seth Roberts earned the win on the mound, allowing five hits and one run, while striking out five in six innings. Three relievers combined to fire three shutout innings.
The Tigers return to action on Friday and Saturday with a pair of doubleheaders at Liberty League foe Vassar. Friday's games get underway at 1 p.m., while Saturday's begin at 12 p.m.
