Game Recap: Women's Hockey | | Joe Venniro - Director of Sports Information

Women's hockey loses overtime heartbreaker to Syracuse

SYRACUSE, NY – Julie Knerr scored 2:34 into overtime to lift host Syracuse (6-5-1, 3-0-1 College Hockey America) to a 2-1 win over the RIT women's hockey team (6-5-2, 1-3-2 College Hockey America) at Tennity Ice Pavilion on Tuesday evening. Syracuse tied the game with 53.4 seconds left in regulation to force overtime and then snap RIT's three-game unbeaten streak.

In overtime, the Tigers looked to have a free out of the zone, but Syracuse's Kallie Goodnough was able to pinch and keep the puck in, then fired a pass in front that deflected to Knerr, who had RIT goaltender #Ali Binnington (Oakville, Ontario/Mississauga Chiefs)# going one way and was able to slide the puck into the left side of the goal from the doorstep for the winning goal.

RIT broke a scoreless tie 5:49 into the third period, as #Ariane Yokoyama (Van Nuys, CA/LA Selects) fired a shot from the right point through traffic after a shot by (Woodstock, Ontario/Waterloo K-W Rangers)Kristina Moss (Webster, NY/Buffalo Bisons)# was blocked from the opposite point. RIT did a great job sustaining play in the zone, as #Tenecia Hiller (Brampton, Ontario/Brampton Thunder)# did a great job getting the puck back to Moss, then setting a screen on the shot that got past Kallie Billadeau for Yokoyama's second tally of the season.

The Tigers ran into penalty problems late, taking two penalties with 2:41 and 1:57 left, giving the Orange a 6-on-3 power-play for 1:20 after they pulled goaltender Kallie Billadeau for the extra attacker. Off a face-off, Akane Hosoyamada found Shiann Darkangelo at the right face-off circle who fired a shot through traffic past Binnington for the tying goal.

Before the goal, Binnington was tremendous, stopping the first 27 shots she faced. Overall, she made 29 saves on 31 shots, as Syracuse held a 31-19 edge in shots overall.

The Orange were 1-for-7 with the man-advantage, while RIT was 0-for-3. Billadeau made 18 saves for the Orange.

Despite the fact that RIT was position to win the game, Head Coach Scott McDonald was not pleased with how his team played tonight.

"I thought we did not give anywhere close to a 60-minute effort tonight," said McDonald. "Syracuse was the much better team and the only reason we had a chance to win the game late was because of our goaltending."

Neither team scored in the scoreless first period, in which Syracuse held a distinct territorial advantage and led in shots 12-5. The Orange were awarded three power-plays in which RIT successfully killed off.

Binnington had to come up big early on, as Darkangelo found herself open in the slot, but the RIT goaltender smothered the shot in her stomach to hang on.

RIT's best chance came late in the period, when #Lindsay Grigg (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Hornets)# picked up a head of steam in the neutral zone, slipped around a defenseman and almost caught Billadeau leaning the wrong way. The Syracuse goaltender was able to hold the post and fall on the puck.

Late in the period, the Orange had a glorious chance on the power-play, as a shot went off the back glass and landed to the side of net, but Binnington dove over to keep the puck out on the carom.

It was more of the same in the second, with neither team being able to get on the board. RIT played a much better period, out-shooting the Orange 7-5, and keeping the puck out of the defensive zone for long stretches.

RIT had a potential 3-on-1 thwarted about six minutes in to the frame, then, while on the power-play, Moss had a good hard shot from the right point stopped by Billadeau.

Syracuse had a few good chances late in the period. Margot Scharfe just missed the net on a 2-on-1, taking a nice feed from Holly Carrie-Mattimoe. Binnington had to come up big on Melissa Piacentini and Cara Johnson moments later in close.

#Julie Hall (Mississauga, Ontario/Mississauga Chiefs) fed a perfect cross-ice pass to (Woodstock, Ontario/Waterloo K-W Rangers)Casidhe Kunichika (Fullerton, CA/LA Selects)# with an open net in the waning moments of the frame, but she had her stick held up just enough for the puck to skitter wide.

Tonight, seniors #Kim Schlattman (Stratford, Ontario/Cambridge Fury)#, Hiller, and Moss all played in their 100th career games. They will be poised to break the RIT career record of games played (109) sometime in January.

Tonight's game was the second in the last 10 days between the two schools. On Nov. 10, Schlattman and #Carly Payerl (Kitchener, Ontario/Resurrection Catholic)# tallied for the Tigers in a 2-2 draw at Ritter Arena. Binnington made 24 saves.  Hosoyamada and Allie Lacombe tallied for. In net, Jenesica Drinkwater was excellent, stopping 36-of-38 shots to be named the game's first star.

RIT is back in action on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 with pair of games at No. 10 North Dakota. Both games get underway at 8:07 EST.
