PROVIDENCE, RI - Sophomore goaltender #
Ali Binnington (Oakville, Ontario/Mississauga Chiefs)# recorded her third shutout of the season, as the RIT women's hockey team (5-4-2) used a tremendous defensive effort to move back over .500 with a 2-0 win at Brown (1-6-0) at Meehan Auditorium on Friday evening.
Binnington made 18 saves to improve to 4-1-1 on the season. RIT's defensive unit did a great job all game limiting quality scoring chances for the Bears. She lowered her goals against average to 1.88 on the season.
Senior forward #
Kim Schlattman (Stratford, Ontario/Cambridge Fury)# scored in the first period, while senior defenseman #
Danielle Read (Brantford, Ontario/Hamilton Hawks)# tallied in the third period for the Tigers.
In net, Katie Jamieson was strong in net for the Bears, stopping 26 shots. Brown has scored just six goals in seven games this season.

RIT Head Coach
Scott McDonald thought his team played a very good road game.
"I thought this was a good, solid win tonight," said McDonald, now in his seventh season behind the bench at RIT. "I thought we grinded it out, played to our game plan, and didn't give Brown many good chances. Our defense stepped up, let Ali (Binnington) see the shots, and she was strong in net."
RIT dominated the opening period of play, out-shooting the Bears 15-4, while scoring the lone goal.
AT the 5:41 mark of the first period, Schlattman jammed home a rebound after #
Kourtney Kunichika (Fullerton, CA/LA Selects) was denied twice in front. (Woodstock, Ontario/Waterloo K-W Rangers)Kristina Moss (Webster, NY/Buffalo Bisons)# fed Kuncihika at the left circle. Kunichika fired a shot that Jamieson stopped, then the goaltender robbed Kunichika again from in tight. With Jamieson down, the puck dribbled to Schlattman at the other side of the goal and the captain was able to stuff it for her team-best sixth goal of the season and 96th career point.
RIT kept coming later in the period, but Jamieson held her ground and kept the Tigers off the board.
Both teams had good chances in a much more even second period of play. RIT's penalty-killing unit had to come up big and deny two Brown power-plays late in the period. Binnington made a great skate save early in the period, then stopped a partial breakaway late in the frame.
Read tallied her first goal and point of the season with just 8:42 left in regulation to give RIT the all important 2-0 lead. She received a pass from #
Katie Hubert (Burlington, Ontario/Burlington Barracudas) on the rush and fired a shot past Jamieson. (Woodstock, Ontario/Waterloo K-W Rangers)Erin Zach (Elmira, Ontario/Cambridge Fury)# also assisted on the goal.
Binnington made her best save of the period with just over three minutes left to preserve the shutout, as she robbed Brittany Moorehead on a redirection in front while the Bears were on a power-play.
RIT is now 4-5-1 all-time against the Bears. Tonight's meeting was the first between the two schools since Feb. 5, 1995.
The two teams conclude their season series on Saturday at 4 p.m.
