RIT men's soccer cannot hold second half lead; lose to No. 17 St. Lawrence 3-2

ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT (8-6-1, 3-3-1 Liberty League) men's soccer team led No. 17 St. Lawrence (12-2-1, 4-2-1 Liberty League) 2-0 with 6:45 to play in regulation, but failed to hold onto the lead, losing to the Saints 3-2 in a critical Liberty League matchup from Tiger Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Saints scored three goals in 4:24 late in the second half, getting the game winner with :21 to play from Alex Laird.

St. Lawrence held a 13-8 shot advantage over RIT. The Tigers took eight corner kicks to 13 for the Saints.

Sean Conway (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) took the loss for RIT, allowing three goals and making two saves. Aaron Costello came in relief for the Saints and picked up the win for St. Lawrence.

After a scoreless first half, RIT finally broke through in the 54th minute on a goal by Danny Bloshkin (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool). He fired a shot from the top of the St. Lawrence penalty box into the top left corner off a feed from Matt Broedel (Hamilton, NY/Hamilton). It was Bloshkin's third goal of the season.

Freshman Reuben Marquez tallied his first collegiate goal in the 71st minute to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead. He scored off a scramble inside the Saints penalty area off a shot by John Kaddo (Troy, NY/Averill Park). Cody Winchell had the other assist on the play.

St. Lawrence kept pressure on the RIT defense, finally breaking through in the 84th minute when Brian Gilloran scored from a sharp angle deep inside the RIT box to cut the RIT lead to 3-1. He fired a shot that deflected off of Conway and into the net.

The Saints tied the score in the 85th minute on an own goal by the Tigers off a defensive miscue inside their own box.

Laird's goal with :21 to play in regulation capped off the run by the Saints. He scored off an assist from Ryan grant who broke in with Laird 2v1 on a counter attack.

With the loss, RIT drops to 3-3-1 in conference play and are tied with Skidmore for fourth place in the Liberty League standings with 10 points apiece. The Tigers will host Hobart College next Saturday at 2:30 pm at Tiger Stadium in a game that could decide RIT's playoff hopes.

RIT returns to action on Wednesday, October 24 when the Tigers travel to Ithaca College, to face the Bombers at 3 pm.
