BRIDGEPORT, CT -- Fresh off a record setting game where the Tigers scored 10 goals, the RIT men's hockey team (12-8-2, 9-4-2 AHA) swept the weekend series with a 3-0 win at Sacred Heart (1-20-1, 0-13-1 AHA) in Atlantic Hockey Association action from Webster Bank Arena on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers outscored the Pioneers 13-0 on the weekend to jump into second place in the AHA standings.
The Tigers outshot the Pioneers 25-21. RIT was 1-for-5 on the power play, while holding Sacred Heart to zero goals in eight power play chances.
Shane Madolora (Salinas, CA/) stopped all 26 shots he faced picking up his 10th win of the season, fifth shutout of the year and 11th of his career. It is the second time in his career that he has recorded back-to-back shutouts in a weekend series. Madolora now has three shutouts in his last four starts and lowers his goals against average in AHA play to 1.54 this season.
Adam Mitchell (Crofton, MD/Baystate Breakers),
Mike Colavecchia (Maple, Ontario/Lindsay Muskies) and
Jeff Smith (Spokane, WA/Tri-City Storm) each scored goals for the Tigers who picked up consecutive road shutouts for the first time as a Division I program.
The lone goal in the first came at 2:31 of the period on Mitchell's sixth goal of the season.
Brad McGowan (Langley, British Columbia/Surrey Eagles) and
Trevor Eckenswiller (Lions Head, Ontario/) had the assists on the power play goal.
The Pioneers had a great chance to score midway through the period when Madolora misplayed the puck behind his net. The Pioneers Chad Filteau coralled the loose puck and just before he shot,
Chris Haltigin (Oakville, Ontario/) dove and deflected the puck away.
Colavecchia scored the lone goal of the second period just 30 seconds into the period on an assist from Haltigin. It was Colavecchia's fourth goal of the weekend after scoring the hat trick on Saturday.
Smith scored a short handed goal at 2:38 of the third period to make it a 3-0 lead for the Tigers. He stripped Sacred Heart's Ryan Miniaci at center ice and broke in on Andrew Bodnarchuk beating him with a nice move, tucking hte puck into the lower right corner. It was Smith's thrid goal of the season.
On Saturday, 14 different Tigers scored points, while eight different players scored two or more points in the 10-0 win. Colavecchia led the way with a natural hat-trick in the third period.
RIT is now 4-3 on its nine-game road swing. They return home on Jan. 27-28 against Mercyhurst. The Tigers lead the all-time series between the two schools, 12-4-2 and are unbeaten in five straight against the Pioneers.
RIT returns to action next weekend with a two-game series at Bentley University. The Tigers face the Falcons on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 20 and 21 at 7:05 pm in Waltham, Mass.
