Women's soccer loses to #8 University of Rochester

ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT women's soccer team put up a valiant effort, but came up a goal short, losing to #8 University of Rochester 2-1 in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon. The Tigers fall to 2-3-0 on the season while the Yellowjackets improve to 5-0-0.

Rochester struck first on a goal by Ellen Coleman in the 20th minute. Elizabeth Martens fired a shot across the RIT goal mouth that Coleman tipped home for her fourth goal of the season.

RIT had a great chance with about 23 minutes remaining in the first half. Rachael Bromson (Suffield, CT/Suffield) drove into the Rochester penalty area. She got a shoulder around her defender and cut the ball back. Bromson spotted Alexa Martinez (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel) and fed her a pass. Martinez fired a shot the just missed the near post.

Grace Van der Ven gave the Yellowjackets a 2-0 lead in the 52nd minute. She fired a shot from just outside the RIT penalty area that sailed into the far corner.

Later in the second half, Jamie Martinez (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel) gathered a loose ball and rifled a good hard shot the Bridget Lang punched over the net.

The Tigers finally broke through in the 83rd minute. Bromson got free in the Rochester penalty area and fed a pass over to Ashley Carrington (Stony Point, NY/North Rockland) who one-timed a shot home to cut the deficit to 2-1.

It was Carrington's first collegiate goal and the first goal the Yellowjackets have conceded this season.

Rochester out shot RIT 14-9 and had four corner kicks to two for the Tigers. Lang picked up the win for Rochester allowing a gola and making one save. Senior Ashley Valenti (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) took the loss for RIT allowing two goals and making one save.

The Tigers are off until Tuesday, September 20 when they face former Empire 8 Nazareth College at 4 pm in Pittsford, New York.
