ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT women's lacrosse team led 8-6 at the half and went on to beat Utica College 15-12 in Empire 8 action on Saturday. The win improves the Tigers to 3-7 overall and 2-2 in the Empire 8. Utica falls to 4-4 overall and 1-3 in the Empire 8.
Shots were even at 27 apiece. RIT won the ground ball battle 25-23 and were 12-of-27 on draw controls. The Tigers were 13-of-15 on clearing attemtps and committed just 11 turnovers.

Shelby Vakiener (Fairport, NY/Fairport) led RIT with four goals and an assist. (Westwood, MA/Westwood)Megan Henriksen (Silver Spring, MD/Our Lady of Good Counsel)# added three goals, while #
Ashleigh Caruso (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) and
Rebecca Lampson (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan Academy) each had two goals. (Westwood, MA/Westwood)Carly Augustyn (Spencerport, NY/Churchville-Chili) added a goal and two assists. (Westwood, MA/Westwood)Katelyn Crane (Palmyra, NY/Palmyra-Macedon)# picked up the win, making 10 saves.
Tammy Kohanski paced the Pioneers with five goals. Lily Fleskes and Katlyn Banker each had three goals. Banker chipped in three assists for the Pioneers. Shelby Barbay took the loss, making eight saves.
Both teams exchanged goals in the opnening moments of the first half, but Vakiener's two straight goals at the 18:10 and 17:01 marks of the half gave the Tigers a 4-2 lead.
Later in the half, with RIT up two goals, Fleskes and Kohanski tallied for the Pioneers tying the score at 5-5.
Caruso and Vakiener each converted on free position attempts to jump the Tigers lead back to two goals at 7-5.
After a Kohanski goal made it 7-6 RIT, Henriksen tallied an unassisted goal with 1:59 to play in the half to give the Tigers an 8-6 lead at the half.
Henriksen opened the scoring in the second half with two straight goals to increase RIT's lead to 10-6, it was their largest of the game.
Kohanski broke the RIT run with her fourth goal of the game to pull the Pioneers to within three at 10-7.

Loren Azlein (Cleveland, OH/Gilmour Academy)#, Caruso and #
Erin York (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeyoye Falls-Lima)# scored consecutive goals for the Tigers to increase their lead to six goals at 13-7.
Kohanski and Banker answered back for Utica, cutting RIT's lead to 13-9 with 17:47 to play.
Lampson and Vakiener sandwiched goals in between a Banker goal giving RIT a 15-10 lead with 10:34 remaining.
The Pioneers tacked on two goals late, but RIT held on to even their mark to 2-2 in the Empire 8.
RIT will host Alfred University in Empire 8 action tomorrow afternoon at 1 pm on RIT Field.
