Women's hoops wins big road game at Hartwick

ONEONTA, NY -- The RIT women's basketball team picked up a big road win defeating Hartwick College 74-67 in Empire 8 action on Friday night. The win improves the Tigers to 5-16 on the season and 3-9 in the Empire 8. Freshman #Courtney Tennant (Cortland, NY/Cortland)# scored a game-high 27 points, including 18 in the second half to pace the Tigers.

RIT jumped out to a quick seven point lead, outscoring the Hawks 9-2 in the first 1:18 of the game. Freshman guard #Jess Kramer (Fayetteville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) made two three pointers and (Neptune, NJ/Neptune)Anne Wapshare (Blasdell, NY/Immaculata Academy)# added a third as RIT got off to the quick start.

Hartwick answered back with an 18-4 run over a 7:24 span in the first half, taking a seven point lead on a jump shot by Fritzi Flores.

RIT closed out the half on a 20-11 run to lead 33-31 at the break. The Tigers shot 46.4% from the floor and were 5-of-7 from three point range. Tennant was 4-of-8 from the floor and led RIT with nine points. Sophomore #Leslie Havens (Wayland, NY/Wayland-Cohocton) added seven points and Wapshare and (Neptune, NJ/Neptune)Mallory Apperson (Bemus Point, NY/Maple Grove)# each added five points.

The Tigers opened the second half on a 14-5 run to lead by 11 points with 13:45 remaining on a layup by Tennant.

Tennant's layup with 7:51 to play in the contest bumped the Tigers lead to 12 points, their largest of the contest.

With RIT leading by 10 and 4:36 remaining on the clock, Hartwick went on a quick 12-5 run to pull within three points on a jump shot by Maria Foglia with :56 remaining the ball game.

Havens responded on the Tigers next possesion with a layup off a drive to bump the lead back to five points for RIT.

Apperson made a pair of free throws with :27 to add to the Tigers lead and make it seven points, and Havens and #Jackie Hom (Newton, MA/Newton South)# each made a free throw to ice the win for RIT.

Tennant was 10-of-17 from the floor and 6-of-7 from the charity stripe while also grabbing 12 rebounds and blocking four shots.

Havens finished with 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting. She grabbed five rebounds and dished out five assists.

Apperson chipped in 12 points off the bench and grabbed six rebounds.

RIT returns to action on Saturday afternoon with an Empire 8 clash at Stevens. Tip-off in Hoboken, New Jersey is at 2 pm.
