ROCHESTER, NY -- On a cold, grey and rainy Senior Day at RIT Field, senior
David Vogt (Rochester, NY/McQuaid)'s goal in the 25th minute proved to be the game winner as the Tigers defeated Ithaca College (4-8-1) 1-0 in non-league action. The win snaps a brief two game losing streak by RIT, improving the Tigers to 10-5-2 on the season.
RIT controlled much of the play, outshooting the Bombers 14-8. The Tigers took 10 corner kicks to just five for Ithaca.
Sean Conway (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) picked up his tenth win and eighth shutout of the season making three saves. Jack Van Adelsberg took the loss for Ithaca allowing one goal and making five saves.
The Tigers controlled play right from the opening whistle, generating several good scoring chances. Senior
Darryl Anderson (San Diego, CA/Southwest) had a really good chance in the fourth minute off a long ball from
Ryan Giust (Chesterland, OH/Hawken School). Anderson broke in alone, firing a hard shot that Van Adelsberg slapped aside on a good diving stop.
Ithaca's lone chance in the first half came on a shot by Zach Hutchinson. His shot was smothered by Conway keeping the Bombers off the scoreboard.
RIT struck in the 25th minute. Van Agelsberg misplayed an attempted clear and kicked the ball right to Vogt who turned and fired a shot into the open net for his second goal of the season, giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
After halftime, RIT kept up the pressure as
Dan Holowaty (Strongsville, OH/St. Ignatius), Anderson and
Todd Gaulocher (Old Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) each had good scoring chances.
With eight minutes to play freshman
Danny Bloshkin (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) sent a ball into the Ithaca area that
Sean Sullivan (Malvern, PA/Great Valley) saved from going out. Vogt gathered the loose ball in front of the goal mouth and fired a shot that was saved off the line by an Ithaca defender keeping it a one-goal deficit.
With 5:45 to play in the second half, Ithaca's Jack Shirley rifled a hard shot from 25 yards out that looked to be headed towards the upper right corner. Conway played it beautifuuly, sprawling out and tipping the ball wide to keep it a 1-0 lead for the Tigers.
The Bombers had a chance inside the last 20 seconds of regulation on a corner kick, but Chris Voehl's service into the RIT area was headed out of harms way by
Kyle Grimaldi (Gloucester, MA/Gloucester) as time ran out and gave the Tigers the win.
RIT wraps up the regular season on Saturday, Oct. 29 with a critical Liberty League contest at No. 11 Hobart. With a win or a tie RIT will finish second in the Liberty League standings and will host Hobart in the Liberty League semifinals next week. If Hobart wins, they clinch second and will host the Tigers in the semifinals. Game time on Saturday is at 1 pm in Geneva, New York.
