ROCHESTER, NY - The RIT men's hockey team hosts the St. Lawrence University Saints at Blue Cross Arena in downtown Rochester on Saturday, October 15 at 7:05 p.m. The game will be the focal point of RIT's Brick City Homecoming and Family Weekend. The game is officially sold out.
The
Democrat and Chronicle, Fidelity Investments, and Bugaboo Creek Steakhouse are Saturday's sponsors. The first 7,000 fans in attendance will receive a free RIT Hockey t-shirt sponsored by Dr. James Watters, Senior Vice President for Finance and Administration at RIT, along with the Brick City Homecoming and Family Weekend committee.
U.S Soccer legend, and Rochester's own Abby Wambach will be signing autographs between the first and second periods. In addition, there will be a ceremonial puck drop prior to the opening face-off featuring Wambach, RIT President Dr. Bill Destler, St. Lawrence senior captain Jacob Drewiske, and RIT senior captain
Chris Haltigin (Oakville, Ontario/).
RIT enters Saturday's game looking for its first win of the season. For the first time in 47 years of varsity hockey at RIT, the Tigers played to a 0-0 tie, opening the season against Niagara last Saturday. It was the first scoreless tie in 1,302 games of RIT hockey, including 234 at the Division I level. Goaltender
Shane Madolora (Salinas, CA/), who was the Division I leader in save percentage and shutouts in 2010-11, picked up right where he left off, stopping all 32 shots he faced for his seventh career shutout.
St. Lawrence is currently 0-3-0 after losing a pair of games at home against Ferris State last weekend, then falling to No. 4 Michigan, 10-3 on Thursday. The Saints fell to Ferris State, 4-2 last Friday, then lost last Saturday, 5-1. In the opener, Kyle Flanagan recorded a goal and an assist, while Greg Carey dished out two helpers. On Saturday, Chris Martin scored the Saints only goal on assists from Carey and Flanagan. The Saints have allowed four power-play goals in just 15 chances over the weekend and have been outscored 19-6 this season.
St. Lawrence leads the all-time series between the two schools, 7-1-0 and is 4-1-0 in RIT's Division I era. In 2009, the Saints defeated RIT, 3-1 behind 42 saves from goaltender Robby Moss. The Saints also defeated RIT at Blue Cross Arena, 2-1 on Oct. 18, 2008.
Last season, RIT drew a Rochester record crowd of 10,556 fans against UMass Lowell during Brick City Homecoming and Family Weekend. The RIT and Rochester community is once again urged to come on out and sellout Blue Cross Arena, creating a sea of orange on Saturday, October 15 at 7:05 p.m.
