PHOENIX, AZ - The RIT baseball team (2-3) picked up its second straight win on Friday, defeating The College of New Jersey by a score of 8-5 at the RussMatt Invitational. RIT never trailed in the victory.
RIT jumped out to a 4-0 first inning lead. St. John's rallied to tie the game at 4 in the third inning. Back to back triples by
Kreag Bradley (Victor, NY/Victor) and
Ed Hughes (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) in the top of the fourth inning gave RIT its lead back for good.
Justin Smith (Livonia, NY/Livonia) was 3-for-4 with a stolen base and one RBI.
Geoff Dornes (Landsville, PA/Hempfield) was 2-for-3 with two RBI. Bradley was also 2-for-3.
Sophomore hurler
Brad Wright (Baldswinville, NY/C.W. Baker) earned the win, allowing just one in four innings of relief.
Joel Walker (Morrisville, VT/Peoples Academy) earned the start on the mound for RIT, allowing four runs over the first four innings. Dornes earned his first career save, throwing a scoreless ninth inning.
RIT concludes its Spring Break trip with a doubleheader against Rockford College. Game one gets underway at 11:30 a.m. EST.
