Tigers beat Knights for first time in program history

ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT (5-1) women's lacrosse team scored six second-half goals en route to a 10-9 win over SUNY Geneseo (2-1) in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon. Freshman #Shelby Vakiener (Fairport, NY/Fairport)# scored the eventual game winner with 6:11 remaining in regulation to give the Tigers their third straight win. It's the first win over Geneseo in 1ten games versus the Knights.

RIT's defense held Geneseo scoreless over the final 5:37 including an extended possession by the Knights inside the the final three minutes.

The Tigers trailed 6-4 at the half, but after a Kim Magee goal gave Geneseo a 7-4 lead, RIT rattled off four straight goals tying the score with 20:17 remaining on the first of two goals by #Ashley Pezze (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland)#.

#Eileen Hennigan (Liverpool, NY/Christian Brothers Academy)#, who finished with a team-high three goals, gave RIT their first lead of the game with 12:03 remaining in the second half on an assist from #Rebecca Lampson (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan Academy)#.

Anna Hutchings tied the score with 7:44 remaining on a free position attempt. It was Hutchings' only tally of the game for Geneseo.

Pezze gave RIT the lead back for good with her second goal of the game with 7:03 remaining in regulation. Vakiener gave the Tigers a 10-8 lead with 6:11 to play and would prove to be the game winner.

Abby Hungerford, who led Geneseo with four goals, made it 10-9 RIT with 5:37 remaining. The Knights held the ball in the RIT zone for much of the remaining time, but RIT's defense was stout, holding Geneseo scoreless.

Freshman goalkeeper #Katelyn Crane (Palmyra, NY/Palmyra-Macedon)# was excellent in net for RIT, making 12 saves and picking up her fourth win of the season.

Annie Smith took the loss, making 12 saves and allowing 10 goals for Geneseo who fall to 2-1 on the season.

RIT returns to action on Saturday, March 27 when they host SUNY Brockport at 4 pm on RIT's Turf Field.
