Men's hockey set to make short trip to Mercyhurst for weekend series

Tigers look to extend unbeaten streak at Mercyhurst Ice Center

ROCHESTER, NY - The RIT men's hockey team travels west on Interstate-90 to face the Mercyhurst Lakers on Friday, Dec. 10 and Saturday, Dec. 11 at 7:05 p.m. in a pair of high-flying Atlantic Hockey contests.

RIT (6-7-2, 5-3-1 AHA) enters this weekend's contests looking to start a new winning streak. Last weekend, the Tigers split a weekend series at American International, winning 4-0 on Friday, and losing 6-2 on Saturday. On Friday, goaltender Shane Madolora (Salinas, CA/) made 16 saves to record his first collegiate shutout. Four different Tigers scored in the win.

Madolora was named the Atlantic Hockey Association Goaltender of the Week. He is 4-0-0 in AHA play, with a 1.48 goals against average and .944 save percentage. He is one of two goaltenders on the national level to not have suffered a loss yet this season. Cameron Burt (Detroit, MI/) is riding a six-game point-scoring streak, with a goal and seven assists during that span.

Mercyhurst (5-7-1, 5-5-0 AHA) comes into this weekend's contests looking to get back on track, having lost three of is last four contests. Last weekend, the Lakers split against Sacred Heart, winning 6-2 on Friday, and losing 3-2 on Saturday. Daniel O'Donoghue leads the team with 10 points. O'Donoghue, Taylor Holmstrom, and Ryan Raven lead the team with five goals apiece, while Kyle Just has a team-high six assists. Ryan Zapolski has seen most of the time in net this season for Mercyhurst. He has a 5-4-0 mark with a 2.36 goals against average and .930 save percentage in nine contests.

RIT is 25-13-4 all-time against the Lakers. RIT went 2-0-0 against Mercyhurst last season, winning pair of one-goal games, 2-1, and 3-2 at Mercyhurst Ice Arena on Nov. 12-13, 2009. Andrew Favot (King City, Ontario/) had a hand on all five RIT goals that weekend, earning Atlantic Hockey Association Player of the Week honors. The Tigers are 9-4-1 against Mercyhurst since moving to Division I in 2005.  They are currently riding a six-game unbeaten streak (5-0-1) at Mercyhurst Ice Center, dating back to the 2006-07 season.
