ROCHESTER, NY – Andrew Favot (King City, Ontario/) became the third Tiger at the Division I level to record 100 career points, as the RIT men's hockey team (4-5-1, 3-1-0 AHA) survived a third-period Connecticut rally to earn the weekend sweep with a 5-3 win over the Huskies (2-3-3, 2-2-1 AHA) before a sellout crowd of 2,100 fans at Ritter Arena on Saturday evening.
Favot tallied the milestone point with 27 seconds left in the first period, on the power-play, redirecting a perfect pass from the right side of the net from
Chris Saracino (St. Louis, MO/Green Bay Gamblers), who faked a shot from the point.
Ben Lynch (Blaine, MN/Lincoln Stars) also assisted on the goal, Favot's fourth of the season.
Favot now has 32 goals and 68 assists in 114 career games. He has 90 points in 83 games since the start of his sophomore season.
Taylor McReynolds (Sherwood Park, Alberta/), Michael Colavecchia, and
Adam Mitchell (Crofton, MD/Baystate Breakers) all scored, added an assist, and were plus-3 apiece for the Tigers, who are 3-0 at Ritter Arena this season. They have won nine straight at home dating back to last season. McReynolds was named the game's first start, Colavecchia, the third star.
Adam Hartley (West Vancouver, British Columbia/Surrey Eagles) scored an empty-net goal with 1.7 seconds left to seal the win for RIT.
Shane Madolora (Salinas, CA/) made 29 saves, 15 including 15 in the third period to earn his second win of the season.
Leading 4-1 heading into the final period, the Tigers ran into penalty trouble and allowed Connecticut to claw back into the contest.
Stevie Bergin cut the Tiger lead to 4-2 with a power-play marker 2:43 into the period, slipping a wrist shot from the wing to the far side on Madolora.
Andrew Olson made it 4-3 Tigers with exactly five minutes left, making a nifty move on a Tiger defenseman, walking in alone and slipping a shot past Madolora.
The Huskies had 1:30 of a power-play late in the period, but the Tigers held serve, and were able to hang on until Hartley took a pass from
Mike Janda (Glen Ellyn, IL/) in the neutral zone, went around a defenseman, and was able to waltz in all alone with the empty net and tally his fifth goal of the year and extend his point streak to five games.
Once again, the Tiger penalty-killing unit struggled, allowing three Connecticut power-play goals in seven chances. It is the fourth time in 2010-11 that RIT has allowed three power-play goals in a game.
RIT was 1-for-6 on the power-play, getting a man-advantage goal for the fourth straight game, and seventh in last eight contests.
Connecticut goaltender Garrett Bartus made 34 saves. Olson had a goal and an assist.
RIT Head Coach
Wayne Wilson was happy with his team's effort, but not thrilled with the abundance of penalties taken in the third period.
“I thought our first period was perhaps out best period of the year (to date),” said Wilson. “We played well in the second period, but took too many bad, undisciplined penalties in the third period that allowed them to get back into the game. Once they got it to 4-3, we played with a lot of poise to hang on for the win.”
The Tigers dominated an opening first period that saw them out-shot Connecticut 18-6.
McReynolds tallied his first goal of the season, just 2:14 into the contest, taking a feed from
Adam Mitchell (Crofton, MD/Baystate Breakers) in the neutral zone, cruising into the zone and firing a wrist shot past a screened Bartus.
Eliot Raibl (Vancouver, British Columbia/Quesnel Millionaires) also assisted on the goal.
Bartus made a handful of big saves to keep it 1-0 before Favot's power-play goal ended the period.
RIT continued its streak of consecutive two-goal periods, upping the lead to 4-1 after 40 minutes of play.
Krispel cut the RIT lead to 2-1, 5:10 into the second period, taking a feed from in tight from Olson and taking a shot that Madolora stopped. Krispel collected his own rebound and slapped a shot past Madolora. Jordan Sims also assisted on the goal.
Colavecchia gave RIT its two-goal lead back just over two minutes later, collecting a turnover caused by McReynolds, spinning, and firing a wicked wrist shot over the glove of Bartus into the top-left corner of the net for his third goal of the year.
The Tigers had chance to really pull away with a full two minutes of 5-on-3 power-play time, but could not convert, failing to generate any great chances.
Mitchell made it 4-1 with 5:03 left in the period, sliding in a pass from Colavecchia for his third goal of the weekend, and fourth of the year.
Scott Knowles (Riverside, Ontario/) started the cycle behind the net to Colavecchia, who found Mitchell all alone at the left side of the Huskies net. Mitchell made no mistake, beating Bartus, who had no chance on the goal.
RIT is now 16-6-1 all-time against the Huskies. They have now won nine straight at home against the Huskies dating back to Jan. 20, 2007, outscoring them 48-20 during that stretch.
Last night,
Tyler Brenner (Linwood, Ontario/) and Mitchell scored a pair of goals apiece to lift the Tigers to a 6-2 win.
RIT returns to action on Friday, as they travel to face AHA rival Niagara at 7:05 p.m.
