ONEONTA, NY - The RIT volleyball team (13-6) went 1-1 in opening round action of the Oneonta State Invitational on Friday. RIT dropped a five-set heartbreaker to host Oneonta State to begin the tournament, but rebounded to defeat Hartwick in three sets in the nightcap.
Oneonta won the first set 25-15, before RIT won set two, 25-16. The Red Dragons won set three, 25-21, before RIT came back and won the fourth set, 25-16. RIT ran out of gas the fifth and deciding set, falling 15-7 to suffer its second straight defeat.
Sophomore
Rebecca Moore (San Diego, CA/Rancho Bernardo) hit a tremendous .368 with 15 kills and just one error in 38 attempts. Senior
Jessica Schaffer (Wellington, OH/Keystone) recorded a double-double with 17 kills and 17 digs.
Katie Cooper (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) and
Kristin Parish (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) both slammed eight kills. Parish hit .333.
Sophomore setter
Christina Worth (Valencia, CA/Valencia) dished out a career-high 54 assists to go along with 10 digs and two service aces.
Megan Henriksen (Silver Spring, MD/Our Lady of Good Counsel) recorded a season-best 25 digs, while
Lauren Kraft (Lockport, NY/Holy Angels Academy) added 13 digs.
RIT cruised to a 25-13, 25-17, 25-17 over Hartwick to end the evening. RIT hit .297 in the victory. Schaffer led the way by hitting .500 with 16 kills and three service aces. Moore added seven kills.
Suzanne Jokajtys (Boonville, NY/Adirondack),
Cat Sullivan (Lehman, PA/Lake-Lehman), and Cooper each recorded four kills.
Worth dished out 36 assists, while Cooper led the team with 12 digs, and Henriksen chipped in with 11 defensive stops.
The Tigers return to action on Saturday, as they play Keene State at 9 a.m. and SUNY IT at 1 p.m. in second day action of the Oneonta State Invitational.
