ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT men's basketball team dropped their second straight game, lsoing to Hartwick College (9-13, 4-9 E8) 64-61 in Empire 8 action on Friday evening. The loss drops RIT to 12-11 overall and 6-8 in the Empire 8.
The Tigers shot 20% from the floor in the opening half on just 5-of-25 shooting. The Tigers were 1-of-7 from behind the three-point line. The Tigers went about five minutes in nthe first half without a point.
The Hawks shot 50% from the floor on 11-of-22 shooting. Jan Cooziello led Hartwick with 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting.
Hartwick extended their lead 14 points early in the second half on a layup by Ramond Doyley, making it 32-18 Hartwick.
RIT went on a 27-11 run, cutting the lead to five points on a three-pointer by
Kenny Gethers (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Grimes) with 11:58 to play.
Shane Foster (Woodland Hills, CA/Calabasas)'s (Woodland Hills, CA/Calabasas) three-pointer with 8:31 to play cut the Hawks lead down to three points at 48-45.
Hartwick responded with a quick 8-0 run to extend their lead back out to 11 points with 6:37 remaining. Jan Cocozziello had six of the 11 points in that run, including two three-pointers.
The Tigers whittled away the Hawks lead and had it down to three points on a layup by
Mark Carson (Voorheesville, NY/Voorheesville) (Voorheesville, NY) with 1:28 to play.
The Tigers had three chances to tie the the game with 29 seconds remaining but three-pointers from
Shawn Roe (Corning, NY/Corning East) (Corning, NY/Corning East) and
Scott Young (Almond, NY/Hornell) (Hornell, NY) fell off the mark.
Mark Carson (Voorheesville, NY/Voorheesville) led RIT with 21 points and 14 rebounds.
Kenny Gethers (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Grimes) (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Grimes) added 12 points and
Nate Korinchak (Strongsville, OH/Strongsville) (Strongsville, OH) chipped in 10.
Hartwick was led by Coczziello who scored a game-high 29 points. A.J. Beaulieu added 15 points for the Hawks.
RIT will host Alfred University on Tuesday, January 19 at 8 pm in Clark Gymnasium.
