PITTSFORD, NY -- For the second straight game the RIT men's basketball team fell to Nazareth College on a bucket with time running out in a tie game. This time the Tigers fell to the Golden Flyers 88-82 in the first round of the JPMorgan Chase Scholarship Tournament at St. John Fisher College.
Barrett Zeinfeld (Tucson, AZ/Catalina Foothills)'s (Tucson, AZ/Catalina Foothills) three-pointer with 50.1 seconds remaining in the second half tied the score at 82-82. He stepped back from his defender and drilled the three with a hand in his face.
After a timeout Nazareth's Joe Canori drove to his left and pulled up from the foul line for the go-ahead jumper.
RIT turned the ball over on their ensuing possession and a layup by the Golden Flyers sRayvon Higdon ealed the victory.
After trailing at the half RIT was able to tie the score on a couple of occasions early in the second half. Shawn Roe (Corning, NY/Corning East)'s (Corning, NY/Corning East) three-pointer at the 15:12 mark tied the score at 52-52.
Nazareth went on a run, taking a 73-62 lead on a layup by Canori midway through the half.
The Tigers kept working hard and slowly crept back in the game with an 18-9 run, capped off by Zeinfeld's three-pointer that tied the score at 82-82.
RIT trailed by as many as 10 points in the first half but a late run cut the Golden Flyers lead down. Adam Sweet (Weedsport, NY/Weedsport) (Weedsport, NY) scored eight straight points for the Tigers to help RIT get back into the game and finished the half with nine.
Barrett Zeinfeld (Tucson, AZ/Catalina Foothills) and Mark Carson (Voorheesville, NY/Voorheesville) (Voorheesville, NY) led RIT with nine points apiece.
Carson finished with a team-high 18 points to go along with nine rebounds. He shot 5-of-11 from the floor and went 8-of-11 from the free throw line.
Barrett Zeinfeld (Tucson, AZ/Catalina Foothills) added 15 points on 5-of-13 shooting from the floor, including 5 three-point field goals.
Kenny Gethers (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Grimes) (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Grimes) had 13 points, three assists and a steal.
RIT (6-6) will face Roberts Wesleyan College in the consolation bracket. That game will be played at 1:30 p.m. on Friday afternoon at the University of Rochester.
