Mike Germain

  • Title
    Volunteer Goaltending Coach

Mike Germain returns for his 12th season as volunteer goaltending coach at RIT. Under his tutelage, Shane Madolora led all Division I goaltenders with seven shutouts in 2011-12 and the nation’s lowest goals against average in 2010-11, while Jared DeMichiel led the nation in wins during the 2009-10 campaign.

Germain came to the Tigers after spending a season as an assistant coach with the American Hockey League’s Rochester Americans. Before that, Germain was an associate coach for the Rochester Junior Americans for four seasons. For three years, Germain was the head coach of the Greece Lightning, one of the top high school teams in Rochester. In his first season, Germain led the Lightning to 17 wins and the New York state quarterfinals.

A 1994 graduate of the State University of Cortland and standout goaltender for the Red Dragons, Germain set single-season school records that still stand for most wins (17, 1992-93) and shutouts (2, 1991-92). He is also the Red Dragons all-time leader in wins (33) and shutouts (3).

Germain, who has a master’s degree in educational administration from Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts and a second master’s degree in liberal studies from the State University College at Brockport, started his coaching career as an assistant at Brockport from 1998-2000.

Germain is an assistant principal at Nathaniel Rochester Community School in the Rochester City School District. He lives in Irondequoit with his wife Melissa, son, Jake, and daughter, Daniella.
