Women's Volleyball outlasts Bethany, 3-2, falls to Grove City, 3-0

LATROBE, Pa. – The RIT Women's Volleyball team split two matches on the second day of the Saint Vincent Bearcat Challenge, Saturday.

  • RIT scored the eight points of the first set, including three kills by sophomore Anna Wasula before Bethany used a 13-6 run capped by five-straight points to pull within one, 14-13. Later clinging to a one-point edge, 20-19, the Tigers finished the set with five-unanswered points on a kill and four-straight service aces by sophomore Isabelle Swain to take the opener.
  • Tied, 10-10, to start the second, RIT rode a 7-2 surge to a 17-12 lead before scoring eight of the final 10 points en route to victory.
  •  Trailing, 10-7, early in the third, the Tigers scored a 6-0 run, including four kills by sophomore Stella Appen, before Bethany bounced back with five-straight points for a 15-13 lead. RIT responded with four-straight points for a 17-15 lead, but Bethany scored four of the next six points to knot the score, 20-20. The Tigers scored the next three points for a 23-20 lead, but Bethany finished the set with a 6-1 run to take the third.
  • Trailing, 8-5, early in the fourth, RIT bounced back with a 6-1 run for an 11-9 lead. Bethany answered with a 7-2 run for a 16-13 lead, the Tigers clawed back within one, 19-18, after winning five of the next eight points, but Bethany finished with a 6-3 run to force a deciding fifth set.
  • Bethany jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the final set, but RIT finished with a decisive 13-3 run, including four-straight kills by senior Mia Gerber to finish the match. 
GROVE CITY 3, RIT 0 (25-14, 25-16, 25-17)

  • Tied, 8-8, in the first set, Grove City scored six-straight points for a 14-8 lead. RIT pulled back within four, 16-12, but Grove City used a 7-1 surge to build a 22-13 lead it would not relinquish.
  • RIT led, 11-9, in the second, but Grove City rode a 13-3 run to a 22-14 lead that proved decisive.
  • Grove City led, 12-7, in the third before a 4-0 Tiger run made it a one-point game, 12-11. Grove City answered with eight-straight points for a decisive 20-11 lead en route to the sweep.
