Baseball defeats Vassar, 7-3

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The visiting Brewers scored the game's first run in the top of the third inning when Dash Edwards scored off a double by Jensen Bergman.
  • After four scoreless innings, RIT broke the game open with a six-run fifth inning.
  • Senior Charlie Slaymaker led off the fifth with a single and later scored the Tigers' first run on a sacrifice bunt by junior Mikey Zacher.
  • Trent Rapp, a senior, delivered an RBI single to score Sam Kulp and extend the lead.
  • Later in the inning, senior Roberto Reade cleared the bases with a three-run triple to center field, giving RIT a 5-1 advantage.
  • Reade later scored on a wild pitch to cap the six-run frame.
  • RIT added another run in the eighth when Slaymaker doubled to right-center to drive in sophomore Remington Lee.
  • Vassar plated two runs in the ninth, but graduate student Ryan Merkov closed out the game on the mound to secure the win for RIT.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Sophomore Ryan Moran earned the win after allowing one run on five hits over seven innings, striking out three. The win puts Moran at 5-0 on the season.
  • Reade went 2-for-4 with a triple and three RBI to lead the Tigers at the plate.
  • Slaymaker also finished 2-for-4 with a double, RBI, run scored, and a stolen base.
  • The win improves RIT's record to 20-12 overall. The team has now 20 or more games in three of the last four seasons.

RIT continues the best-of-three Liberty League Crossover series against Vassar with Game 2 and 3 (if necessary) tomorrow (May 2) starting at noon at the RIT Baseball Complex.
