ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Graduate student
Dylan Joseph struck out nine batters over 8.2 innings to lead the RIT baseball team past Vassar, 5-3, earning the two-game sweep against the Brewers in the Liberty League Crossover Series, Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Tigers will serve as the hosts for the upcoming four-team double-elimination Liberty League Tournament, which begins Thursday (May 7).
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The visiting Brewers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning before Joseph came in from the bullpen to shut the door the rest of the way.
- RIT got on the board in the bottom of the second when graduate student Sam Kulp launched a solo home run to right-center field to make it 3-1.
- The Tigers cut the deficit to one in the fourth as senior Jarin Moses drove in classmate Caelan Kim with a two-out single to left field.
- RIT tied the game in the sixth when junior Evan Kurtz tripled to right-center and scored on a groundout by senior Trent Rapp.
- The Tigers took control in the seventh inning as Mikey Zacher, a junior, sent a two-run hit over the left-center fence, scoring senior Charlie Slaymaker and giving RIT a 5-3 lead.
- Joseph was dominant in relief, tossing a career-high 8.2 innings and allowing just five hits while striking out nine to earn the win and close out the series sweep.
GAME NOTES
- RIT improved to 21-12 overall and 15-4 in Liberty League play.
- Joseph improved to 6-0 on the season, allowing no runs after the first inning.
- Zacher went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI.
- Moses finished 3-for-5 with an RBI and a double.
- The Tigers turned four double plays and were error-free defensively.
- The series sweep clinched home-field advantage for the Liberty League Tournament.
