Women's Lacrosse beats Merchant Marine, 15-7

CLEARWATER, FL – RIT senior attack Jenna Bovenzi scored a career-high four goals and seven points to lead the Tigers to a 15-7 win over Merchant Marine, Monday.
 
Senior midfielder Grace Validzic scored a career-high three goals and four points. Senior midfielders Morgan Nichter and Kate Trojan each scored two goals and senior attack Serafine Kiselgof scored a goal and an assist. Senior midfielder Adele Jones won three draws, caused four turnovers and had an assist. Senior attack Milena Stephen won seven draws and senior goalie Ellie Ruddy made three saves in net for the Tigers.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Lesley Wysong scored for Merchant Marine early in the first quarter to give the Mariners a 1-0 lead.
  • Bovenzi tied the game at 1-1 on her free-position goal with 10:08 to play in the opening frame.
  • Reese Ripley scored back-to-back goals to give Merchant Marine a 3-1 lead midway through the first quarter.
  • RIT scored the final three goals of the opening quarter, taking a 4-3 lead on Bovenzi's second goal of the quarter.
  • The Tigers outscored Merchant Marine 4-0 in the second quarter to lead 8-3 at halftime.
  • Nichter scored a free-position goal and Validzic, Trojan and Bovenzi each tallied women-up goals for the Tigers in the second quarter.
  • RIT scored the first two goals of the third quarter, extending its lead to 10-3 on senior midfielder Eliza Barton's goal with 9:15 remaining in the quarter.
  • Sarah Litz and Grace Picozzi tallied back-to-back goals cutting RIT's lead to 10-5 on Picozzi's goal with 2:31 to play in the quarter.
  • Sophomore defender Jocelyn Lee scored early in the fourth quarter followed by a pair of goals from Validzic to give the Tigers a 13-5 lead.
  • Wysong scored to cut RIT's lead to 13-6 before Trojan scored to give the Tigers a 14-6 lead.
  • Picozzi scored before Bovenzi scored with six seconds remaining to make it a 15-7 final.
 
GAME NOTES:
  • RIT outshot Merchant Marine, 28-20.
  • The Tigers won 14-of-24 draws and went 15-of-17 on clears.
  • RIT went 3-for-5 on free-position attempts.
