NAPLES, Fla. – The RIT Softball Team swept Rockford (Ill.), 13-12, and Brooklyn College, 10-2 (8 inn.) on the second day of action at the Gene Cusic Classic, Monday.
RIT 13, ROCKFORD (ILL.) 12
- Sophomore Carlianna Ewing went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and knocked home what proved to be the game-winning run in the top of the sixth.
- First-year Taryn Jones ended 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and four RBI.
- Rockford put together a six-run second, before the Tigers answered with a three-run third, including a two-run single by Jones.
- RIT brought five runs across in the fourth, including a two-run double by Jones, back-to-back RBI hits by Ewing and first-year Madison Passineau and a two-run double by first-year Paige Stein that yielded a 10-6 lead.
- Rockford got two back in the bottom of the fourth, but an RBI single by sophomore Kate Carlone pushed the Tigers back to an 11-8 lead.
- Rockford answered with a four-run fifth for a 12-11 lead, but RIT scored twice in the sixth for a lead it would not relinquish.
- Sophomore Addison Hill picked up the relief victory over the final 5.2 innings, allowing four earned runs and striking out three, including back-to-back scoreless innings in the sixth and seventh.
RIT 10, BROOKLYN COLLEGE 2 (6 INN.)
- Passineau finished 3-for-3 with her first two career home runs, a double and four RBI as RIT plated nine runs over the final three innings for the decisive victory.
- Passineau tied the game, 1-1, with a solo home run in the second inning.
- Brooklyn retook the lead with a run in the top of the fourth, but the Tigers answered with one in the bottom of the fourth on a ground out by sophomore Syliva White.
- Cavotta started the fifth by reaching third on a misplayed ball by the centerfielder, before coming home on a single by Ewing. Carlone brought Ewing home with an RBI single and advanced to second after White was hit by a pitch. Passineu cleared the bases with a shot over the left field fence for a 7-2 lead.
- In the sixth, Jones drew a bases-loaded walk before Cavotta came home on a ball hit by Carlone that was misplayed by the third baseman.
- Sophomore Blair Mackenzie earned the complete game victory, only allowing three hits and three walks while striking out five.

RIT is scheduled to face Alfred State at 9:00 a.m. and Potsdam at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday (Mar.10) at the North Collier Regional Park on the third day of action at the Gene Cusic Classic.
